Digging

Postby Suzle87 » Sun Feb 17, 2019 4:42 am

Hi just a quick question, ven has been digging a lot lately and I’ve started to worrry what if he is trying to get out? Is something wrong and he wants to escape? Temps and humidity etc are all fine and same as ever so don’t think it’s that, he gets a run around my room for 30mins or so every day or two. Any input Is appreciated thanks.

My first thought also was to check the heat and humidity. Since those are good, I wouldn't worry about it. Digging is a natural behavior for them. They all do it at some point or another. Is it burrowing underneath completely or just pawing at the substrate? If it doesn't have enough substrate to completely submerge, I would provide that for it.

My bluetongues and water skinks love having a dig about. Goes with the territory and just a skink thing.

I will add another bag of substrate when I get in and triple check my temps etc just to be totally sure. He seems to tunnel al around the edges of the vivarium, then under the water bowl which is heavy so I don’t get how he’s even doing that, then he waits for me to tidy it all up and starts again!

Added more substrate and moved everything around for him, he’s still digging but not quite so much and merrily sleeps out in the open so I don’t think anything can be wrong other than him being a little weirdo, a lovely weirdo but a weirdo al the same haha, cracks me up when I see his little face watching me in the dark in the morning, just that little white chin in the darkness haha.

Some of mine dig almost constantly. Some don't do it at all. It's definitely not a problem though, a natural behavior for them.

Yeh he definitely goes through phases and at the moment digging and plant felling is top of the list I think! Then other times he has lazy weeks.

Yeah, they're sort of like us....sometimes we just don't feel like doing anything and others we are full of energy!
