Northern or Indonesian BTS??

Postby nickinbaby » Sun Dec 02, 2018 7:32 pm

I just got my new little guy and was told he was an northern BTS but I was watching a YouTube video and might be an Indonesian BTS. I know they have two completely different care requirements. What do you guys think?

Yeah looks like an Irian Jaya to me. Not a Northern. Care is similar except Irian Jayas need humidity levels near 60%.

A picture of my Irian Jaya. She was also sold to me as a Northern at a reptile show years ago. Unfortunately, it is very commonly done.

Yes, IJ. As stated above, a very common mis-representation. Many dealers don't even know there are various locales of blueys. And most are called "Northerns" as that is the only named species they know. It happens so frequently I must again stress the importance of knowing and recognizing all species before you buy, as their care can be variable.
As far as pet quality, IJs are right up there with the Northerns, very beautiful and docile skinks. All the best of luck with your new pet!
