BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

hi everyone,

I went to a cactus nursery and somehow started talking to the lady there about my bts. She told me that they had a blue tongue who would always came and sleep with the cactuses ( I live in Australia)
I was wondering if you could put cactuses in their enclosures? I thought that they would look good but I don’t want to hurt him. What are your opinions on this?

Hi! A cactus in your blueys tank would give it a nice desert themed look, however I’m a little concerned about you Bluey accidentally hurting himself on the spikes of the cactus if he is unaware that it is there because it’s a new decoration in his tank. I use fake reptile plants for my blueys enclosure (even though she doesn’t take much notice of them, but it’s the thought that counts haha!)

What are some good normal plants to put in the tank? And would notmal succulents be better? I definitely don’t want to hurt him.

Agree that I would be concerned about the spikes on cactus for Blueys, since they like to stomp over everything I would be careful with which succulents you may choose since Bluey's can try to eat them (and I believe many species of succulents can be toxic if ingested). Can't say specifically which would be ideal plants, but perhaps see if there are articles or guides for bioactive/natural tanks for Bearded Dragons (on the assumption that since they are also omnivores, that plant choices there would be similar).

Or alternatively as Angel says, there are some decent looking fake plants that would be easy to setup and no risk factor ^__^

I'd stay away from any live plants. And cactus? Heck no. When outdoors it's a whole different scene, they're not likely to be digging up plants. They dig around in their enclosures, and just not a really good idea although aesthetically pleasing to us. Living plants are great for your dart frogs, anoles and geckos. BTs are like little bulldozers and could care less for scenery. Simple is best, and easiest to keep clean and germ-free. My males get so frantic when in season I actually have to keep them on paper at that time, and they even make a horrible mess of that.
