MDF timber enclosures

Postby Y33T » Thu Mar 15, 2018 6:42 am

i'm hoping to get these kinds of enclosures on my birthday because my babies are due for an upgrade especially my 2 year old eastern who is quickly outgrowing his 3ft tank.
i was planning on getting the reptile one 90x45x45 melamine enclosures at petbarn but its probably very expensive and would cost over $700 for 2. so i did a quick search on ebay and found 120x50x40 enclosures which costs $500 for 2 which is more affordable.

dumb question. how do you fit the glass doors in without shattering them? it's the only thing that's bothering me lately.
and is there other ways to "lock" the doors before i will buy a proper lock? i heard blueys can open doors.

Unless it's kitchen grade MDF ==> it's a horrible board to use in any viv where water is likely to be splashed about / spilt or humidity will be anything but decicated desert like. In a very short order you will end up with swollen timber crumble that's falling to pieces.
The Reptile One kit will be OK for SHORT TERM only. Better off visiting Bunnings and getting some 12mm or 15mm plywood sheet cut to size by the trade desk and assembling your own viv.

If you are getting a baby or juvenile under 12 months , a tub with transparent sides is great start off viv , until the skink outgrows it. Very easy to convert at tub to a rearing tank ( ie https://www.beardeddragon.org/forums/vi ... 4&t=233480 ) Bunnings ALL SET 100L and 145L tubs are good value.

BTW : steer clear of Reptile One and Natural Selections compact 5% and 10% UVB compacts - they are very poor quality and will harm your new scaly child. I recommend 25W UVB150 globes for Easterns and 25W UVB200 globes for Northerns , even better is an Arcadia T5HO 6%UVB for easterns , T5HO 12%UVB for northerns.

Sliding glass doors : this is the system I use : http://www.cowdroy.co.nz/uploads/MK11.pdf
