Hey guys,
Barczyk recently went into shed and was completely fine and happy until a couple days ago when I noticed a hole in his scale. The hole seemed to get bigger and now there are a couple more. I was thinking that it may just have been a cut or something until I noticed that one of his scales had "fallen off". Some of his scales seem to be starting to come off like he is shedding again... but he shredded a week ago. Is this normal? I've looked for mites and have not seen any. I tried searching this online and there was nothing like it. Could it have been him burrowing in the aspen? Besides that, he is completely happy and eats fine. Here are a couple photos.

It looks to me to just be a harder shed. What do you have your humidity set at?

Yes, could be too dry with the aspen. My Northerns used to have awful sheds when I was using it. Sometimes there are a few leftover scales that come off a few days later and they will be looking a bit discolored prior. When I used aspen I would have to soak them to get the leftover shed off their feet. Watch for that, too, as it could restrict blood flow to the little toes and make them fall off. Personally I do not like aspen, too much dust and my allergies and my reptiles have been much better since I stopped using it.

I'm finding te humidity a bit high, it's usually around 45%. What bedding do you suggest?

Re: HELP Holes in scales?
I use mostly repti bark, sometimes combined with coco-husk (they come in a compressed brick). I keep Northerns and Easterns. No more shedding issues. I also have large water bowls in their cages big enough for them to soak in, which one of my northerns does when she's preparing to shed. She thinks she's a snake. Smart girl.
