BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

Hey there,
I just had a couple quick questions on my northern BTS. His humidity is usually around 50% and I just wanted to make sure that was ok for him. I currently have him on aspen. The temp of the room is about 74 farigenheit and his hot side is about 90-100 degrees. He also has a very tiny "bump" right where his bottom and top jaw meet. It looks to be part of the scale and is not discoloured or oddly textured. I just wanted to make sure everything is ok with him.

Lower the humidity. They need 25%-40% . Do you have a picture of the bump?

I have a couple photos. The flash seems to make it look worse than it is. It almost looks like the scale is deformed. I doubt it is mouth rot because it looks very different than the photos I have viewed online.

You don’t need to lower the humidity. Northerns are tolerant of low humidity. I keep mine around 50% humidity. Their natural range has average humidity around 60-80% plus. It’s a common misconception that they HAVE to kept in low humidity. I’ve seen to many northerns with missing toes and other issues from being kept too dry. Your temps and humidy are spot on.

Too high of humidity can result in respiratory infections.

Ok, thank you guys so much! My humidity usually lowers as winter approaches anyways so it will probably be 40% soon. Glad there is nothing to worry about with it. Just making sure, the small "bump" is not a concern?

I don't see anything wrong. My northerns are kept at 50-70 percent humidity. They had shedding problems when I kept them at less. They eat. They brumate. They breed. They're fine. I've not had a trip to the vet in 30 years.

I've read somewhere that high humidity can cause RI. I guess they were wrong. Nothing beats experience.

Shedding problems can be dietary - too much protein of the wrong kind. (This was advise given by my reptile vet, so I cut dog food and resorted to more insects and boiled lean chicken as an occasional addition) and problem resolved itself).

Mine get plenty of insects as I breed all my own, although some will not eat them.. I have found aspen bedding to cause extreme dryness and dust to add to my already dry conditions in my apartment. No more soaking to remove stuck shed on toes. All good since changed to repti-bark and similar.
