BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

vegeta prince of all skinks has been having an issue with his mouth he doesnt seem to be having any discoloration in the mouth but he is definitely getting some sort of scabbing on his roght side which looks to be a little puffy as well the other side of his mouth doesnt have any issues and looks completely fine so basically my question is does this look like infectious stomatitis or could it be another issue all together any help would be great! ive also included a picture of one of the scabs that came out of his mouth.

Definitely looks like something to be concerned about. I would have it looked at by a vet. Keep us posted and let us know what they say.

So vegeta prince of all skinks is gonna be just fine i guess he wasnt getting enough calcium and the uv bulb i had wasnt good enough so that was starting the early stage of MBD. and that also contributed to infectious stomatitis. easy fix new bulb, calcium supplement, and anti biotics.

Hopefully the fix will help. A good time to check over your husbandry to make sure all your set up is right. What temps and humidity do you have?

My temps are usually 98-102 on the hot side in the day and 74-79 on the cool side and humidity I'm not certain of because I've been told since he's a northern he doesn't need a lot of humidity and just having a large water dish should provide enough although I do mist the terrarium 1-2 times a week. I got a secondary UV bulb so you guys believe that the power sun UV MVB is a good enough source of UV rays as long as I am supplementing his diet with calcium?

Also now that I've done a little more research on different types of BTS I'm not entirely sure he's a northern he doesn't seem to have the size northerns do and his coloring seems wrong. Anyone have any ideas what he could be?

100% NOT a northern. Is one of the Indonesian types, which need around 60% humidity. This is why I asked about humidity and husbandry, because I was worried he is showing signs of being kept in chronically low humidity which can cause significant health problems. That makes sense if you were told he is a northern but this is absolutely incorrect.

Add a humid hide ASAP (see here) and you need to find ways to provide the appropriate humidity. Also check out the care sheets for Indonesian and Merauke species. I have no experience with the Indo species (being an Australian) so I'll leave it up to others to make an ID for you.

And UVB is good to provide but biggest help will be proper diet and supplementing with calcium+d3. Follow the diet guidelines in the FAQs on this forum.

thanks for the input guys/gals! this is really helping me to be a better owner. ill definitely be getting an automatic mister and a humidity guage. i live in wyoming so its super dry here any ideas on how to keep humidity up that high.?

Definitely use a humid hide as was recommended. Also use a substrate that holds water well. I like jungle mix with Reptibark on top. I pour about 16oz of water on it once a week. I never have any issues with my guy.

i gave him the hide but i will also need the mister because my job requires m3 to leave for a few days at a time. also the substrate i have been using in coconut fiber mixed with reptibark is that good enough or should i change it up?

Should be good. Just keep an eye on it. Also make sure the substrate doesn't get to wet. You don't want your BTS to be laying in wet.

Hey everyone so I'm having trouble keeping my humidity up I've tried covering the top of the terrarium part way but it hasn't helped much I got an auto mister and it will keep the humidity in the 60-80 range for a while but it will gradually lower down to 30-40 again between mists I've got it up to 8 sprays per day for 12 second durations and I don't want to go any higher because I don't him him getting directly sprayed with the mist that much. Also he doesn't use his humid hide is it because it's a clear piece of Tupperware? Should I try a darker hide?

I don't have much trouble with humidity because my house has humidity issues in general, my problem is keeping in heat.

How do you heat the tank? I know that heat lamps dry things out fast.

Give him a hide that is not clear, he may feel more secure and use it. Also put a huge water bowl in there. That will help with humidity. My Northerns even had shedding issues before I switched over from glass to PVC type caging.

I use heat lamps it's the only way I can keep the tank above 100 degrees. And okay I'll try a darker hide and see what that does and how big of a water dish are we talkin something big enough to hold a Dasani water bottle worth or bigger?
