Skink has bloody spots on feet soles

I recently made a post where I talked about doing a total cage cleaning. After the total clean, I had my skink on bare, white melamine for a short period of time and during that timespan, I noticed bloody smears scattered around the cage floor. The smears were very small and at first I thought nothing of them. Then after 2 days, they haven't gone away and I flipped my skink over to find that EACH of his four feet have small bloody sores or ulcers on the soles.

He recently shed, so I think part of the problem may be shed related. I plan on giving him a lukewarm bath and manually removing old shed.

I also thought about putting on Neosporin (triple antibiotic in petroleum jelly base) in order to accelerate healing and prevent infection. However, since it is on the underside of his feet, I don't know how to make sure the medication actually stays on the wounds. Perhaps a bandage? Will the adhesive tear off his toes or cause further damage?

The problem areas look very minor, but I lost a leopard gecko due shedding issues complicated with infections. That situation was much, much worse and I REALLY would not like to repeat that nor let it get to that point.

Try putting an old towel or some paper towel down in the enclosure; this is a long-shot, but it sounds like it could be blisters. If he recently shed and his feet were tender, the melamine could be rubbing them raw since his claws would have a harder time gripping the floor, kind of like if a person wears shoes without socks. Just an idea. The towel would give him something softer to walk on that he could grab onto.

Once his feet heal, then put substrate back into the tank - a good 2-4 inches of cypress or orchid bark for humidity.

I didn't even think of the possibility of blisters. But that makes sense. I will try putting an old shirt in the cage to provide more grip.

As for the actual raw spots, do you or anyone else recommend actively applying ointment? I am interested in healing this as quickly as possible. After the lukewarm bath yesterday, the spots seemed to have softened up and do not look like active bleeds anymore.

Herps' wounds heal pretty slowly compared to mammals even with ointment, but you can use Neosporin without painkiller to speed up the process. By his next shed, it should be all cleared up; the sores didn't look very deep.

Don't worry too much; I think your dude will be just fine. They're hardy little critters. If the sores do get worse for some reason, contact a vet. If he still eats, poops, and walks, though, you should be in the clear. Just make sure he has plenty of hiding spots and enough humidity (about 60%) until he can have substrate again.
