2 questions about my skink!

Postby Cyrinus » Wed Apr 13, 2016 3:34 pm

I decided to get a BTS after keeping Beardies for years.
I've had Groot since February now. I recently found this forum, and I thought I'd join. Of course, my first thing to do is ask you guys a few questions. Now, this one has stumped several people. This image was taken after Groot had shed part of his head. Two white spots appeared on his scales. They aren't raised up like boils, they seem to be the color of his scales, or maybe he lost some while shedding?

And while I'm here, I wanted to ask about Groot's mouth. He's had these sort of indents since I got him. It's almost as if he's bitten his lips several times. Anyone know if it's just a scale abnormality? I don't think it's mouth rot. He eats just fine and has no pus/discharge from his mouth.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Can't really see clearly from the photos. Can you post ones with better resolution that will stand zooming in? These ones are highly pixelated.

Appears to be an old injury. Freshly shed scabs expose a white spot like that. I'm guessing this is where the injury is not open anymore, but the osteoderm has not fully healed. Hard to tell with the mouth photo, but there does look to be some retained shed on both the upper and lower part of the mouth, as well as on the toes..

I'm guessing from these photos you have a classic Indonesian? What are you keeping humidity at?

Whoops, sorry! Let me see if I can figure out how to upload them to the site without messing with the resolution.

He was shedding when that was taken. That's why his toes look like that. He hates having his toes picked at, but I don't want him to lose one.

Yes, I was told he was Indo. I got him at a reptile show. I'll try to get a close up in the morning. My camera doesn't want to focus on his mouth, and Groot doesn't want to be still long enough.

I mist his cage because I do have some trouble keeping the humidity constant. The lid to his terrarium is wrapped in foil with a cut out area for light. I've read that would help, but it hasn't much. He lives on moss and reptile bark. I try to keep it around 50%. I do have to check it often to make sure it stays that way.

Like I said, he has had those since I got him. I didn't think much of them, but though since I was here I'd ask. I clean off his face, occasionally when eating wetter food it does get stuck in these little indents. I'm so worried about mouth rot.

I wasn't sure if I could post this many times in a row. Here's a better picture! The brown stuff towards the tip of his mouth is just dirt. Hopefully, you can see the indents better.

I would also guess the white marks on the head are possibly old injuries. The dents on the lips are nothing to be worried about; they could also be old injuries, but bumps and dents on the lips show up from time to time without any apparent reason. Unless it's discolored in any way, just keep an eye on it and try to keep food out of it as much as possible.
