I think my skink has a burn

Postby kojiinari » Tue Jan 26, 2016 6:13 pm

His under tank heater got hot. I've since removed it and replaced it with a ceramic bulb up top, but Rick had a bright red streak in his belly, and I'm afraid it might be a burn. Advice?

I should mention there are no blisters, it does not seem to be affecting him any (behavior wise) and he's already been soaked in water for a bit.

This is why a temp gun is really necessary when using UTH.
Is there a possibility he's going into shed? It may be the result of overheating, but it could also just be a normal coloration --not really common to see streaks of color like that, in a line like that, but it could be normal...

Normally I keep a very close eye on his temperature in his cage. I was using a temp gun but it had been a couple days since I'd checked it. We found that there must have been a malfunction in the UTH because even the plastic of the UTH was melted and brittle and cracking - which I had not noticed because it was underneath the tank. I have discontinued its use and have him set up with a ceramic bulb for heat.

The red mark is mostly gone now - it is a small red dot just under his chin now. I kept a close eye on it - there were no blisters or cracking or anything really other than the color change. He is acting normal, eating normally, drinking normally. He's about to enter shed again, so I'll see if he still has any red coloration under himself after shed.

Whew- glad to hear he's doing better. UTH scare me, like the heat rocks. I've just seen too many horror stories, though I'm sure for every scary picture, there are 30 cases of people never having issues. I think I'm just a chicken about all that.

Post pictures after shed! Would love to see how this goes!

Yeah, heat-mats are just scary on plastic tubs... Too many malfunctions; they're just not meant to be used on anything except glass. Heat tape is a bit different from what I understand, but after seeing a heat-mat malfunction, I'll be honest, even heat tape scares me a bit.
