BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

Ok so I'm new to the bts scene and after searching around my state I found a beautiful sub adult male(what I was told) guy told me he is a CB northern but I'm not too sure... He is really figity when I pick him up and hisses. He doesn't open his mouth at all but will act a little agressive! Is this normal? I've had him for a week now and he doesn't seem to be taking to the handling yet... Any advice would be appreciated greatly! Thanks!

He is an Irian Jaya. I'd doubt he is captive bred, but he may be captive born. You can't really judge whether or not they are WC, CB, CBB, etc. based on behavior, though. One of my Northerns is the most wild skink I have ever owned, and he is guaranteed to be CBB. Being an IJ, though, it shouldn't take much effort taming him down; they are typically a very docile species.

Thanks for the response! He does seem to be coming out more when we are in the room and checking everything out so maybe a few more weeks he won't be so flighty when I go to handle him

Still amazes me how misidentified blue tongues still are. Especially with them surging in popularity lately. But that's a nice IJ. Just give him time to settle in. I usually give a new skink at least three weeks before I attempt handling. I keep interaction to a minimum durning that time. Since he's an IJ he'll need high humidity to stay healthy.
