BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

From what i gather, it should be something large enough for the skink to lay in, i haven't really found anything here suitable, and the one his previous owner gave me is way too small. Would something like this work?

I use that, its great as not much substrate ends up in it and they can get in and out really easily. Only thing I'd say is it's kind of small. My 3mo old is bigger than the width, but still fits the bulk of his body in it when he wants to.

I use large water bowls designed for dogs that measure a bit over a foot across. One of my Northerns likes to sit in there before a shed and fits in there well. As far as lighting, I use the one bulb that does it all, powersun mercury vapor lamp.
A bit pricey but last over a year, much longer in the wire type fixtures that do not allow the bulbs to overheat. It's heat and uvb all in one, also saves you the use of multiple power outlets. I've used them for years for my BTs and bearded dragons, and no issues. There are many different manufacturers of these bulbs, I find the powersun to last the longest.
And your skink does not hate you, some of my Gigas types don't like when I walk into the room either, depending on their mood, sometimes they run and others they just stare me down, hoping I'll go away or give them a treat...

Hey thanks for the quick review Splashy. I was just in pet co looking at that vapor bulb but was put off by the price. Knowing it last about a year I might pick it up now.

I have had problems with zoomed repti rock bowls slowly leaking. I have talked to other people who have had the same problem with them.

I use large glass Pyrex baking dishes.

Been using these crock bowels for years. They don't leak, and easy to sanitize .

For babies I put a 3 inch portion cup inside , and throw away when dirty. Instead of removing and cleaning 200 water bowls. I have found this size for $1.40 in quantity.

And Adults , These are thicker than the other brand, and fit a 4 inch 16 oz. deli cup exactly . Have 165 of these. Found these for $ 4.60 in quantity

Best part is the skinks cant tip or dump them, They just push them through the sub straight.

I use the ones Ray posted for food and Pyrex baking dishes for water bowls.

I also use large casserole dishes! Sacrificed quite a few for my larger snakes! And about the mercury vapor bulbs, check online stores such as Drs. Foster and Smith, sometimes you can find them much cheaper than retail pet shops.

so you just use that mercury vapor bulb for both heat AND uvb?

Yes, the one bulb does it all and have been using them since their introduction to the hobby, as I used to breed bearded dragons. Their UVB needs are serious, and never had any problems raising them. Love those bulbs. In summer my apartment gets real hot and to avoid overheating the bulbs (shortens their life span) I use the wire type fixtures. I just put foil around the front of them because looking at those bulbs can hurt your eyes, like staring at the sun. If you choose to use them with a dome type fixture make sure to get a large one. I have limited outlet space and quite an extensive collection so it helps there too.

i have 2 beardies too, what do you use for lighting on the other end of their cages, it would be dark without a long flourescent tube?

I don't use a light on the other end. Sometimes he prefers it darker, but the room is very bright therefore the cage is not that dark on the one side.
