Feeding Skinks Carrion(dead feeder rodents)?

Postby TokayBlueTongue » Fri Sep 25, 2015 6:23 pm

So I have a halamhera blue tongue skink who is about 10 inches long and eats just about any kind of food I offer him. I also own several snakes including a somewhat large ball python who feeds on medium ft rats. Now my question is the bp doesn't always eat the rat which are priced at $4 a piece (screw you Petco) and now I end up with just a dead rat that I used to just throw away and threw away $4. My question was and I know this is going to seems gross as sh*t and nasty but could I feed my bts like the rat's organs or could I just throw the body in his tank, let his have at it for an hour or two and then throw the remains away. I know in the wild bts eat carrion and I was wondering if this would be ok to do.

I wouldn't do it for a skink that small without cutting it up into pieces no bigger than the space between his eyes. But if you do that, I don't see an issue with it.

Been there, done that ! But they can only eat something that can fit between the width of their eyes .
Don't give them anything too large (wide) , my adults can swallow young adult mice ( first time breeders) .
I used to use them as garbage cans when the snakes wouldn't eat the live mice .
Cat and Dog food is so much easier, and cheaper, and safer to feed ( they cant choke on it ).

Eeeewww! My huge Northern ate a f/t rat pup once I had left over from snake feeding time. I didn't think it to be to large for her, thinking if she had come upon a birds nest or a bunch of baby rodents under a rock somewhere in her native land no one would be there with a steak knife. Never thought of cutting up a big one though, but I guess it would be ok. No need here as I keep leopard boas who serve as the cleanup crew when the ball pythons get finicky. I also buy in bulk, but if you only have one or two to feed I guess that wouldn't be an option for you, but it's a fraction of the price. EEW! Darn, I just had breakfast..
