BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

Hello everyone,

I recently got my first blue tongue, and it is the Tanimbar. It seemed skittish, so I have been letting him settle in his new enclosure. I have had many lizards in the past, however this is my first blue. The information I have come across, is a little unnerving. Information saying they are aggressive and snappy, where all other Blue Tongues seem to be calm and relaxed. I haven't been snapped at yet, only hissed, which i am used to from by bearded dragon. Does anyone have any insight into taming, or have some Tanimabr experience?

Ill give an update in case anyone finds themselves in a similar situation. I spoke with a breeder who was incredibly helpful, and gave really solid insight. Captive bread Tanimbars are not all that different from other skinks. The wild Tanimbars will charge, bite, urinate and have bowel movements on those trying to interact with them. I am lucky to have a captive bread baby. I have been able to handle him, with a lot of hissing, and huffing and puffing. He does run from me, which is understandable seeing as he is still very young, and not familiar with much. Still lots of work needs to be done, however it was very reassuring to hear, and experience they are not the blood thirsty creatures some articles lead you to believe.

Who is the breeder?

Absolutely awesome golden baby! They are nervous when young, my Tanimbar never bit me out of aggression. Hissing is quite common, they are known to calm down as they get used to your smell. My Tanimbar is 7-years-old captive bred boy and he climbs the glass front of his terrarium when I cook. My Tanimbar always urinates on me when I move him from my lap, that is his way of complaining he didn't want to me moved! Tanimbars have attitude!
