Newborn babies?

Hello Friends!

I have some questions about newborn bluetongueskink babies.

After birth how long time should i wait before trying to introducing food for the first time / your experience of feeding newborns?

How do u do with your newborn babies, is it possible to feed them together for the first weeks?

Should i move them from the mother directly?

Im not a breeder so i may be wrong but my impressions are.

Within the first day or 2 you can feed them.

Generally you keep babies together for awhile so you feed them just a giant dish of food and let them go to town on it, unless there is a runt or something then you take them out on there own and feed them alone aswell.

You move them from the mothers tank right away because the mother can crush them being in a small enclosed space.

I place a dish of food in the enclosure while my momma is still giving birth. Not only will the babies go to it and eat, she always grabs a snack about half way through. I mix a little water with dog food. The babies love lapping up the gravy.

You can keep babies together for the first few days. They will basically sleep until they are hungry, then wake up to eat and roam around. I start separating them to singles or pairs at about a week old.

I separate them from the mother as soon as I can.

Babies can eat pretty much as soon as they are born - I generally give softly cooked egg, to simulate them eating their yolk sac. However generally, many will take to dog food straight away - note that some miss out on eating their yolk sac at birth - it can get eaten by another baby, the mother, or if with other blueys eg outdoor, often by other adults. Babies that don't eat within a couple of days don't do as well as those that do - probably for a number of reasons.

I agree. The babies will actually eat each others birthing membrane and any thing else in site seconds after birth. I scatter some moist small kernel cat food around on the substrate where the babies are being born, (on newspaper) not mulch or wood chips. The first borns eat the cat food after consuming their afterbirth and pretty much leave the others alone as the litter is being born. Babies need to be housed separately. They will start eating each other next time they are hungry and that is pretty soon. Mike
