Best way to feed crickets to a skink

Postby Leibregime » Thu May 14, 2015 3:57 am

Hey there.
I recently watched some youtube videos on skinks hunting down crickets and it looked like the reptiles had so much fun hunting down those insects...now I decided to get some of them for my indonesian skink Private. Recently he had his first full shed (at least since I have him) and I wanted to give him a little goodie for his great work.

Now I do have some memories of the past when I owned a leopard gecko. Some crickets managed to escape and shortly after we had them all over the place.
Now I REALLY don't want to have this issue again.
I've seen this Cricket Pen Box which seems to be pretty solid for extracting some crickets without risking an escape.
How do you feed your skinks?
On the online videos I saw some people putting the skinks into a big plastic bowl with crickets inside. Does this hold the crickets off from escaping? They can get really jumpy when facing their predator after all.

Any help or information on this would help me a lot in the decision process.

Hi there! I have a large plastic tub that I use to feed my reptiles things that I do not want to give them in their enclosure. Eggs, crickets, just about anything I don't want them to try and eat off their substrate if dropped from a dish. Also useful for when cleaning cages, you can put your reptile in there and give him a treat so he is not so stressed being somewhere strange. I especially don't like loose crickets in enclosures (always one or two will get away from a reptile and hide) because they are nocturnal and will walk all over sleeping lizards at night and bother them. Personally I do not use crickets for my skinks but feed them dubias and superworms as treats, which I breed myself. Have fun!

Thanks for the info splashy!
I think I start with some crickets today. My bluey still is pretty shy (we have him for about 2 months now) and he does not really want to get handled yet but I think when we take him out and crickety fun awaits he certainly will remember that good things are happening when getting handled. :)
Hope he will appreciate this little treat.

I think my wife would kill me if I take roaches inside. Haha

Drop them in the water dish and watch your skink dive in after them, kind of like bobbing for apples.
