Gestation length question.

Postby StaceyLeigh » Thu Apr 09, 2015 2:35 pm

Ok this is mainly for those of you on the forums who have been breeding for a few years. Do you find that your females have very similar gestation lengths year to year? I don't mean compared to other females you have just year to year for that female. One of mine (a Northern ) consistently had longer (133 to 138) days, while the 2nd went 114 last season.

quite variable for me,but i put that down to vrry inconsistent temps, ehich just like with reptile eggs in an incubator, can affect gestation/hatching lengths, female blueys are just like a living incubator

outdoors with my blotchies, one of the darkest females,i call her a high black animal, she often somehow pips all the others by sometimes a month, probably due to her ability to watm her self more effeicently in cooler weather, shes often mated later than others to so not always an artifact of being first lass covered

another thing to kerp in mind is ehen they actually ovulate, from memory, you only put them together a handful of times yes?
some seasons, especially if cool during breeding period there windows can stay open for weeks, ive had as long as 5 to 6 weeks of open window, snd have jyst stopped pairing them because they kept wanting to mate, majority of the time the window dhuts with in a week or so on average, what im getting at there is if mating comes early in the window, ovulation may still be weeks off giving impression of longer gestations,a few variables can come into play

consistent temps and good control of them often leads to consistent gestation lengths, where over many years some are able to have a very good idea of when girls will drop,i cant even predict when mine will mate, lol, changes every season due to variable conditions

My females tend to vary year to year. I just keep track from the first successful copulation though because that is the easiest thing to record. If I could catch them ovulating, I'm fairly certain that the gestation times would be much more consistent from that point.
