HELP with eastern feeding

Hey guys I'm getting my bluey on the weekend and I really need to know what do I feed him/her. This is my first reptile and I really need some help I would like to know what you feed yours. Since I have no idea about bts species I'm not sure if it helps if I say I'm getting an eastern bts

Welcome to the club! *woot* I just got mine from the Levin breeder last week. If you go read the caresheet on the main site that's got a lot of great detailed info too.

Mainly I feed a variety of canned dog and cat food plus veggies and butternut squash.

I have 5 northerns that I feed only canned dog food. I use grain free chicken, turkey, and beef. I don't add vegetables since it's already mixed with the food. Blues typically don't eat greens in the wild. They only eat them as a survival option when their regular food is scarce. If you are getting a baby they need the extra protein to grow and probably won't eat any greens durning that time. Most of the big breeders and keepers use only dog food. Just make sure what ever you do feed your skink it is supplemented with cal/d3. They need the d3 for calcium absorption. Good luck with your new skink. Post pics when you get it.

blueys actually do eat alot of greens in the wild,studies show this but wild diet is about survival and at some times of year thats whats plentiful for them with out needing to exert much energy in getting a feed

Anyway given that you are in NZ I assume that you have an endless supply of European Garden Snails (Helix aspera)- your bluey could just about live on these alone.

Wild Easterns blueys often poo out a huge amount of fruit seeds, particularly plums - and do love diced apple which is actually not a bad fruit from a Calcium to Phosphorus ratio perspective. Also things like Lilly Pilly fruits, Dianellas (flax lilies) are also good.

In general they can eat a wide range of foods with an eye to their Ca:P ratios but avoid processes foods with added salt or spices. They can be picky at times and go off food for prolonged periods. Generally if they get more meat as part of their diet they tend to get pickier and wait for it to come. They are worse in this department than blotched blueys for example.

As a generalization they are relatively shy and will often wait until you leave the room before eating but this varies between individuals, as do their preferences.
