First BTS :)

Postby kimdangervance » Sat Jan 10, 2015 3:02 pm

Hey there! I went to the reptile expo today and got my first bluey :) I got it from reptile pets direct. They assured me that he is CBB and I found the link to the website which also says that their Irian Jayas are CBB ( http://www.reptilepetsdirect.com/C.B.B.%20Irian%20Jaya%20Blue%20Tongue%20Skink.php ). I'm so happy. This little guy wasn't hissy when I picked him up (there was another one that was extremely hissy). Not sure on a name yet, I'm thinking Ridley.
When he got home he started exploring a little bit then crawled under his log and hasn't moved since. This is normal, right?
He also has a little bit of shed left, but it'll come off by itself right? (this is my first reptile so I'm new to shedding)
sidenote: this guy from another booth was trying to sell me a little halmahera for $200 and the poor thing had a missing toe :( that made me a little mad but anyways...

Happy day :ohyes:

He's so thin looking! :/ Otherwise he's beautiful. How are your tank's stats, like humidity, temps, what lighting, substrate, etc etc etc? How often are you feeding him, and what are you feeding him?

I got him today so I haven't really seen him eat. I put out some grain free dog food the chicken and venison stew with green beans and sweet potato with a couple of snails. But he's hiding right now and doesn't seem interested. Right now humidity is at 56% I misted down the viv and put a tupperware of really moist moss on the hot side to hopefully raise it a bit. Substrate is a mix of aspen and sphagnum moss. The basking rock is at 96 F the substrate on the hot side is 88F middle tank is 72F and cool is 68F ... I know, the cool side is really cold for right now :( I don't have any bulb over it.

His diet is ok for a good amount of feedings, but they eat large varieties of foods in the wild, so greens and veggies and fruit are good, remember, just switch out ingredients and use the food chart. Humidity is really good if you can get it to stay there reliably, (I can't) and having too many lights will suck humidity out of the tank.

I got that dog food and I also got the Wellness brand Core turkey, chicken liver, and turkey liver formula to mix it up and i have some fresh collard greens, mustard greens, and turnip greens. with the zoomed snails and caterpillars to mix things up :) whenever he decides that he wants to come out and eat. The people i bought him from said they were feeding him cat food and worms which doesn't really seem like a good diet to me :/. Humidity is probably going to be the hardest thing to keep up.

What substrate do you use??

Just make him dome scrambled egg- no buyer or milk worry about the variety in his diet once he is up and eating. Congrats

Thank you! I'll try that when he decides to come out.
Is it normal for them to hide away at first?? He hasn't come out of his log pretty much since I put him in there. Maybe he's just adjusting?

Not CBB, but still a beauty. Irian Jayas recently got imported by Bushmaster (Indonesia importer), and this is were everyone is getting them. This is why it is so skinny, as they sold him as soon as they bought him. Good luck on fattening him up.

Still happy with him :) but yeah he does look pretty thin. Tomorrow I'll try scrambling some eggs and make him a little omelette or something haha. And they said he was eating catfood and worms. I tried dogfood, but maybe i'll try getting some cat food and starting off on that just to make sure he's eating.
He popped his head out once, but other than that he's been burrowed underneath the substrate, silly guy. For now I'm just going to offer him things and hope he comes out for a bit to eat.
