BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

This female is 157 days from first mating and 140 days from last mating. Weighing in at 705 grams. Do I let her give birth in the rack or do I put her into a 4ft enclosure? Opinions......

4ft otherwise she may eat or damage some of them.

Last season when I had her, she gave birth in a rack on newspaper.

At the end of the day, I don't think it really matters. A tub is easier to clean though.

Like you Scott inadvertent damage to the young is my main concern. I either take the cane mulch out of the tub or put her in the 4fter. I think the 4fter looks the winner.

I don't trust scincoides in a small enclosure, last time if had an Eastern give birth in a small enclosure I only found three babies, one with a missing tail. I suspect the rest were eaten.

My prince regent lass has been fine birthing in a tiny cage,never even looks like harming her offspring,checks them out but thats about it,the cage with big adult wild caught male and two females that have babies is a 6 foot long cage,never any issues with the adults towards the offspring,they all check them out but thats it,one year with a big litter of 16 babies i did find two had been tail nipped,my thinking there from actually watching other litter being born is it was the result of litter mates trying to pinch there birth sacs

On the other hand my dark kunnanurra lass ate at least two babies last season,as i walked in on her downing one and found anothers tail in the 3 foot enclosure,she dropped 4 slugs after that unfortunatly,this season she went again,i walked in on her dropping slugs which she quickly was consuming before having the next one and she dropped a slug and then a baby in one push and looked to be goung to the baby with not good intent,was a tiny baby i had to help break free from birth membrane and took a while to get going being a little bit weak,but after a couple of feeds is doing great since,that female had it in a 4x2 conventional reptile cage and shes a bit out of the ordinary to say the least(bit of a wack job)only scincoides ive ever had thats done this,all individuals i guess but the majority of northerns and easterns actually seem to just check them out or totally ignore them and go about there business,all individuals though and have heard of it enough to know theres always a risk

Weighing in at 470g, 166 days after first mating, 149 after last mating. In a 4ft enclosure yesterday she gave birth to 10 babies.
Checked the enclosure last night before bed to see if there were anymore. Checked this morning about 11am and found one basking next to its mum.
The total is 11.

About time. Well done girl.

Nice one scott,lol at one basking next to its mum,first time i bred mine they didnt drop till mid feb making me wonder ehat the heck they were doing,they did mate late though that season,mine have changed every season,the 2nd year were all december babies,then november and very early december babies,then all november babies,this season to change it up more they had babies in early oct,early and late november and last in early december,theu definatly dont like setting any patterns for me,lol

Her last mating was the 15th of august. I thought they were over cooked. All came out scrawny looking but today I noticed all looked nice and plump.

Yeah, never be too quick to judge the status of a newborn. Sometimes they need a day or two of breathing oxygen for them to start looking right.

I usually start offering food to them 36-48 hours post birth, some will eat straight away and others take a few extra days.

Congrats! Long gestations are tough! I have 1 girl who has gone 134- 138 days. She likes to make me wait, lol... Nice looking babies.
