Signs of Impaction?

Postby Haley » Wed Dec 10, 2014 11:35 am

My bluey, per my knowledge, has not excreted any feces in the last week or so. His basking spot is about about 100-105 degrees, while the cool side is about 75 degrees Fahrenheit. His last meal was on about Sunday and he did pass urates and a significant amount of urine on Monday. I took him out yesterday and placed him in his basking spot, he stayed there or on the warm side for most of the day. I have not seen him straining and have not seen any feces in his cage. Honestly, its hard to tell if its impaction or if its just because he is going into shed. I will try some apple sauce and mineral oil and see if that helps.

The slowing down of the bluey's system is most possibly linked to brumation.

I would not recommend the use of mineral oil in the treatment of any suspected cases of impaction. A true impaction can set hard which the oil would not penetrate to break down the mass, it would merely pass around it, or worse block the intestine even more. A medication producing an osmotic effect in the colon will help to draw further moisture into the colon to assist in breaking down the faecal mass.

Ah that could very well be. I will keep an eye on him for awhile and if not I will bring him into my clinic for some further work up. I won't use the mineral oil, thank you for your very good point!
