Buried himself away

Postby andyfrance001 » Fri Nov 14, 2014 12:15 am

My BTS buried himself away about eight days ago now, cant even see him. He came out for some food yesterday ate it and then went away again. I'm still changing the water every other day. Its at 80 deg in his tank. The lights in the tank come on 7am till 7pm. Had him about six months and he came out everyday before looking round the tank and up to the glass to come out. Is this normal to hide away and how long will he be like this for please?

It's common for Blue Tongue Skinks to enter a period called brumation when the temperature gets colder. During this time they are usually less active and will usually stay buried for long periods of time, coming up for food and water occasionally. If the temperature is dropping below 60F/15C in your house, you might consider getting an under-tank heat pad to help keep the temperature up. Otherwise, your skink will probably remain in brumation throughout the winter. Hope this helps!

Even if I keep the temperatures up, my 6-year-old bts always eats very little and brumates in the winter. He just started sleeping and these are signs is he about to brumate.

Do Indonesian blue tongue skinks brumate or is it common for them to go underground too the point where I don’t even know if there in the cage I’m very scared since I haven’t seen my skink in 4 days
