OK, so I took Toad out today. He scratched the crap out of my arms. lol He is still pretty young. How old till I can start trimming his nails? Any suggestions as to be able to have him naturally trim them himself?

Indivar is younger than Toad and I have already trimmed his. If they can scratch then it's time to trim!

I"m having the same problem with Indigo. He is turning into Freddy Kruiger. My hands and arms are constantly scratched up. You can trim them now if you are comfortable with it. Just be careful because they do have a quick which will bleed if you cut too much. I tried to cut Indigo's nails without much success. He doesn't like his feet touched so he ran up on my shoulder and peed on me. :heated:

Yeah, I am not looking forward to trimming his nails. I need to do it soon though. I read somewhere that it is pretty normal to get some blood because their quicks go into the majority of the nail. I am not sure if that is true though.

What is the best way to naturally wear down their nails? Basically what do you all suggest for decorum inside his enclosure that would help with keeping his nails trimmed?

i use a slate tile as a basking platform. i'm not sure how much it wears down the nails, but i don't notice them being particularly sharp. i have my beardie on slate tiles too, and i've never clipped nails on either of them.

As soon as I purchase Toad's new enclosure I will be doing something with tiles. I am not sure what exactly, but something. lol

you want the nails to not impede on you BTS walking pattern. So when his nails are at the correct length your BTS foot will virtually be flat. Like the picture I posted. I just clipped his nails today. Hope this helps. I hold my guy in a towel and put his paw on my finger and slowly clip his nails. just be careful that you don't go too short. Its normal if there is some blood. It has happened once or twice with me... you will learn which is too short or long. It is also normal for them to quickly pull away when you clip the nail. *Just wanted to write that in case you get startled.

You would want to clip the tip of each toenail. You want to clip below the membrane which will cause your bts to bleed if you don't watch how far you clip.

Does anyone have advice on clipping nails on babies? I tried clipping Iroh's nails and I got some of them but he was so squirmy. His little toes seem so fragile and I don't want to hurt him, but he needs trimming. Help?

Man oh man! I am NOT looking forward to clipping Toad's nails. I believe they are a little bit long, but not too long at all. I think I will try to find a local person who has BTS and have them help me the first couple of times. lol

You could also look into taking him into a veterinary clinic, especially if there is one near you that deals with exotics. I took Malygos into work with me and we were able to clip his nails easily with small clippers since the girls are used to safely restraining other animals.
