breeding windows in northerns

Postby Richard.C » Thu Jul 31, 2014 7:18 am

I think ray quizzed me a while back about how long a male northern will go covering females? Correct me if im wrong ray

Anyways my answer was usually my males go for up to 2 weeks or so,especially if females cycle around the same time, couple of seasons ago,my big male covered one female over a 6 week period, and 2 other females over a 5 week period,he showed no interest in latter 2 until a week after starting with first one,he was still interested in first girl after 6 weeks but i decided to quit pring them

They have started earlier this season, the first male off the mark was on june 6th,today is july31st and that same male mated another girl today,6 days shy of a 2 month breeding window and hes still going

Also of note, the current female is the sister of the one he was mating in early june, there housed together with a large adult wild caught male,in the past shes cycled around same time as her sis upto a week later, this season the gaps a heck of a lot bigger, although in a 6 foot cage with heat up one end,and really cold at the other,i put that down to her staying down cool end longer than her sis

And longer breeding windows in females seem to occur with cooler temps which holds ovulation back, where i live, its very easy for ambient temps to stay very low
