BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

I was just curious if anyone had ever used or considered using these shallow feeding troughs to house blueys in? Or even for a basking tub for outside?

Seems to me there have been members here who have used/are using troughs similar to that.
I would be a bit concerned about it not being deep enough to safely hold BTS by the time you add dirt/substrate and hides/shade in it, but I don't know how high the sides are.

That makes sense...do you think if you used it for outside it might get too Hot with it being black?

Definitely if you put it in the sun --which would be the reason to have it outside-- unless you provide some kind of shade and/or moist dirt in the bottom of it.

I have thought about using those too, but the main problem that springs to mind for me is the ledge near the middle. I know my guys would use that like a step ladder and be out in a second unless you invented a secure screen lid for it. Also I would definitely recommend putting some substrate on the ground if you put the tub in the sun; that black plastic gets really hot.

Something like RoryBreaker has would be perfect!

Awsome Rory! What type of mesh do you use for the lid? Does it block much UV?

I was worried about the ledge too, but there are so many troughs to use so finding a smooth one shouldn't be a hassle! Thankyou all for the input!

A wire screen, 1/4" or 1/2", is strong, durable, and lets light and UVB through no problem.

It's just what we call 'mouse wire' here. Spray paint it black and it almost disappears.

I live in a rural area and the local critters can't be trusted, be it rodents, birds, dogs, cats or reptiles. It's strong enough to keep them all out.

It lets plenty of light in.

What are the temps your bts get there in texas?

Im guessing what ever texas throws at them,variable temps

Anything above 45 degrees. Right now, the temps are around 75-102 throughout the day.
