Possible Case of "Mystery Disease"

Postby donkeybuff » Mon Mar 03, 2014 10:04 pm

Hi guys,

So a little while (week?) ago I noticed that Coffee, my indo, had some dirt around his nostrils. I dismissed it as some dirt from digging around in the substrate. On Saturday, it became clear that he was having trouble breathing through his nostrils as they were plugged up by nasal discharge mixing with the dirt. I thought it was a normal RI, so I scheduled a vet appointment and raised temps, etc. The earliest that the vet could take him was Friday :? Today, I noticed that some of his toes/feet looked pretty bad. Much worse than what I'd usually see with a stuck layer of shed. I had removed the remaining shed from his toes, anyways. I'm pretty sure that his feet were fine yesterday. He has not displayed any eye issues yet; they're prefectly clear and discharge-free. Could this be the "mystery disease"? Do any of you who have dealt with it recall the order of the symptoms? Specifically, do eye issues generally come last?

Just in case I see more signs of the mystery disease, any recommendations for what to tell the vet when I see him? Should I switch him to paper towels? Also, I'm kind of conflicted on what to do with humidity. I don't want to make it too high and worsen the RI, but I know that some of you have had success with raising humidity for this disease. Any advice from the people who have dealt with this would be nice.

Hopefully, this turns out to be an easily treatable RI.

Thanks, Sachin

I've been having this exact problem with Roarschak too!! I've taken him to the vet multiple times and they always say he is fine! I'm very curious as to what others will say about this! I'm at about the same stage as yourself unfortunately though...

There are some threads about it if you want to read up on it.

I've had some cases that start with eyes and some that start with toes.
My advice would be to first visit a vet, and then bump up your humidity when RI has been ruled out/treated.

I know this is a lot of reading, and this is almost exclusively just my case with Joey, but here are the threads about our struggle:

Sick little guy? viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16019

We still keep fighting viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16564

I unfortunately did not figure out the humidity factor until Joey was gone, but since then, every skink who has showed signs of, what I took to calling, the "mystery illness" has been halted in progression after the installation of a MistKing humidifier.
