A few pictures of my old Gigas collection

Postby Scincoides » Mon Feb 17, 2014 10:41 pm

I was looking through some old photos this evening and found a few pictures of some of my old Meraukes, Keis, and an Ij. They are all pretty old and not the best quality, but i thought it would be cool to post them. A couple were rescues that i gave away, and the rest were sold to gather funds for fat tail geckos. I still kick myself everytime i see these. Definitely should have held onto them.

You had a really nice group! I think you definitely have some nicer Meraukes than you had before, though. Did you ever get any breeding out of any of these guys?

Wow! Those Keis are fantastic!
I see you are not a stranger to owning a Merauke how has dealt with the "mystery illness"... That is a really interesting reduced pattern.
I'd be kicking myself too if I were you

Yeah they are a really cool species. May be my favorite indo variety. Although the meraukes are so sweet and huge that they are a very close second.

Very nice. May I ask what caused the damage to the one merauke's back? I really like that skink, and of course the kei.

Most of the damage on the reduced pattern male was due to him being kept with a female that i cant find any pics of at the moment, before ending up in my care. The pair was housed in a 20 long enclosure with an exposed bulb which caused the burn on his back. These were very large adult animals being housed in a twenty gallon tank. I bought the pair and the tank for 40.00 and quickly seperated them. After they had both gotten up to good weight and the burn had healed on the male, i donated one to a school and one to a local older lady who lived alone and wanted a first reptile pet.

I wish i could find pics of the other merauke, she looked great in comparison, but she was missing most of one foot and had some serious kinks in the tail.

My reaction exactly. The local reptile shop owner snagged them from some little kid who's parents had bought them for her as babies, then called me and charged me what he had paid them. I honestly didn't even want to take them at all, I was worried that they wouldnt survive. They were in horrible shape.

You are just trying to post these pictures to make me hate myself for not owning a Kei, aren't you? Shame on you Austin.

(I personally feel you are *goes to google a fancy synonym for crazy* bats in the belfry for selling your group of Keis.

Dakota, i dont know how well you can make it out in the background of the photos, but the house i was living in at that point was a tiny little shack without central heating or cooling. I needed money to spend on fat tail geckos because i needed gecko babies to fund my exodus from that little plywood box that i was forcing my family to live in. I bought into white out and patternless fat tails, and fifteen months later had the money to move. It was a well thought out plan/investment that bettered my family's situation in the long run. Without a rack full of geckos, i would probably still be living there. I would have loved to keep them. It just wasnt in the cards for me at that point.

Making you hate yourself for not owning keis is just a huge added bonus

Ah, well you can minus the bats in the belfry part then. :)

And yes.. I hate seeing pictures of animals I will not likely get any time soon :grump: (only kidding, it just makes me want them even more). ML had me looking up Axanthics today.. and ugh.. then here comes the Keis.

Of course I'm partial to the Keis but that reduced pattern Merauke is very cool!

One day, I will win the lottery and spend it all on multiple breeding groups of shingles, westerns, centralians, blotchies, and easterns. One day...
