SafeGuard deworming dosing?

Postby Spindown » Tue Feb 11, 2014 7:10 pm

Hey guys, couldn't seem to post in the AD section, but does anybody know what frequency to dose with SafeGuard dewormer? Example: once every week for 2 weeks, etc. I already have the dosage, just not the time periods. Thanks!

When deworming wc stuff, I do three doses of panacure which I beleive is the same stuff at one dose per week. Then I give two weeks off and follow it with three doses of flagyl

Out of interest, why do you follow with Flagyl?

I worked for a reptile shop and that was standard procedure at that time. I guess panacure only covers some of the plethora of internal parasites that plague some WC animals. Flagyl takes care of some that panacure doesnt. Its simply the way I was taught to do things.

Ive heard of that to,panacur doesnt cover all basrs so flagyl is followed up with to with wildcaughts commonly in the states

Ive actually never wormed a reptile, theres risks with preventativr worming, over use can lead to parasites gaining immunity to treatments

If immune systems at full strength and they arent stressed and hygene is catered to,they can happily live a normal healthy life with parisites

There are cases over here where wildcaughts treated for worms have suffered severe respitory infections from the killing of lungworms that they have had

Id prefer to treat something if i know its there and causing issues, though our wild caughts dont go through quite as harsh an import process

Interesting, thanks Austin, although I'm not too sure a couple of doses would be enough to have a long-lasting effect.

Metronidazole has good efficacy against anaerobic bacteria especially Clostridium difficile and can disrupt the parasitic Giardia enough to prevent replication. I have used it with mammalian pets in combination with Baytril to broaden the spectrum when initially dealing with an as yet unidentified bacterium.

@ Spindown - I don't know about the US but in Australia it is an Rx drug.

Panacur is an anti-helminthic (i.e., for worms). Flagyl is for single-celled organisms like bacteria.

I've actually taken both myself. The worming medication after living in the rainforest in Papua New Guinea for almost two years and flagyl after being meticulous about drinking only bottled drinks/water in Bali but then forgetting that the ice they put in my drink was made from tap water (Giardia followed soon after -- D'oh!).

I'm only treating for worms and as preventative as last year a few had serious issue with worms after waking from brumation. I have a few that just never made it through the process for one reason or another, so I'm just doing everyone at once. I only plan on deworming once a year at MOST.
