First successful lock of 2014 (Northerns, mating pic)

Postby Spindown » Tue Feb 11, 2014 2:15 pm

Woot! FIrst successful lock for the 2014 breeding season! Broodlord x Overlord (Northerns). Sorry for the bad cell pics, please ignore the spilled water too :D
There is a reason that it is SO important to monitor bluey breeding as its happening...Overlord at one point got too excited and started trying to get an anchor on her tail. THAT was stopped asap. No damage to her tail of course, and he figured it out right quick after that.

Definitely went better & faster than last year for the courting, as they both know what to do now. Hopefully bubs for 2014 and not more slugs! So excited, and Sand boa pairingsi are coming up fast!

Go little fella, always cracks me up when smaller males mate large females

Do u find the male favours certain females at one time, wondering because u have a group situation

Definitely, in fact this is the only female any of the males are interested in.

That will likely change as different females cycle,do u have more than 1 male in there was going to be my next question, lol

Similar thing occurs with my blotchies outdoors, females cycle at different times, and usually a male concentrates on one at a time, but sometimes ive seen a male cover multi females on a given day, blotchy males have more vigour than northerns and recharge pretty quick, last season i saw dominant male cover a female one afternoon in a 4 hour window 6 times for example

Indoors my northerns do similar,i can try different females but they favour one, unless more are cycling at same time, but generally they are all different and often overlap other females cycles

Sorry, Spindown, didn't mean to.

Woot! Hoping for success for you - I well know about "slugging out" - that's what happened to me last year too. Keep pairing 'em while they are still showing interest.

Thanks! And no worries about that, I pair them until they dont want anything to do with each other, then they are done. Last year they got in 4 locks, not bad for total 'newbies'. Slugging out is just so disappointing!

I actually think my male might have been attempting a second lock directly after the first, but they were too tired :D
Does that actually happen on occasion?

My new female hasn't eaten yet, and still in QT until March...if she is still in the mood after QT I would love to see some bubs from her...but we'll see :D

Do you think my male that is breeding now would still be interested in that time frame?

Congrats Allie- looks good, I wish you success this breeding season :ohyes:

As to whether or not the male will still be interested in March, I think they can have fairly long seasons. My male who mated with both my females mid-January is still looking for some action-poor guy

My breeding season left a few months the ago, and Ema is still swollen like no other, and still tries to go after Xaunder when I have them outside basking. I wouldn't let it follow through of course.. but from the first time he bred which was early November?? to now he is still interested in mating.
