BTS breathing problems

Postby Trevour93 » Sun Jan 26, 2014 3:57 pm

Hello everyone, new to the forum here.

So got my BTS about 4 months ago and I've noticed recently he has been sleeping a lot and just not very active, like he used to be. It looks like his nose is plugged up like a stuffy nose. He has a hard time breathing, he eats and drinks fine but just sleeps a lot during the day. What should I do? I'm struggling for money right now so it's hard for me to take him to a vet.

This time of year often sees them slow down, even with heat,so that probably explains ghe sleeping more, are his eyes watery at all? Gunky looking?

Could be a sign of respitory infection,or he may just have clogged nostrils from substrate ect

Any problem with discharge from nose or labored breathing, in my opinion, needs to be seen by a vet ASAP.

Eyes don't seem to be watery at all, and no nasal discharge. He just seems to be having labored breathing. How much would a vet visit cost approximately?

If you can see something plugging up the nose, then there's discharge. If you have noticed a change in his breathing (which would be natural if it's plugged up) and he's struggling, then you need to have him looked at by a professional, reptile specialist veterinarian.

How much they charge is different in every city of every state. My exotic vet in UT charges $40 for the exam unless it's an emergency after-hours, but that's just to get into the room with the vet. Any testing, shots, medications, x-rays, etc. are extra on top. I normally average $100-120 with a sick animal. But we tend to be MUCH cheaper in UT than in CA.

Your best bet is to google reptile vets in your area and start calling around, asking how much they charge for a check-up.

If his breathing has changed since you got him and become more labored, then there isn't much you can fix at home - he needs a vet. They generally seem to have somewhat labored breathing, but if it has changed and if he seems to have a blocked nose, you really need to see a vet.

These things generally don't pop up out of nowhere, if you explain your husbandry, temps and diet we may be able to help determine what contributed to this.
