Crusty eye?

Postby TJreptiles » Thu Jan 23, 2014 9:25 pm

I don't know what to call it, but I noticed Monday that my northern's eye was sorta crusty? And wasn't opened all the way. I soaked him in luke warm water hoping it would help. So far it hasn't. I don't know what it is, I was thinking it may be his bedding, but it's only one eye? Any help would be appreciated.

Could you post a picture? Eye discharge can be a sign of respiratory infection.

Ill do my best to post one tomorrow. Do you think if it is a respiratory problem it could be caused from the bedding? I use aspen shavings.

Could be early respitory issue, eye waters and drys up causing krustiness, usually u see nose discharge to though, slight open mouth breathing, and both eyes water, though just one could to

Od lean more towards maybe its scraped eye on furniture or substrate perhaps, especially if it otherwise seems fine

Great news! I went up there today and his eye was perfect! He just shed today so I'm guessing it had to do with that. Thank you guys for the help, and Thor thanks you to.

Hmm.. same thing happened with Maxx when I first got him. Very crusty, swelled eyes.. then when he shed is all disappeared.

My guess is he was having trouble shedding -- due to low humidity before I got him, and the layer of shed on his eyelids were irritating the eyeball causing it to water, swell, and then crust over. Was your Northern swelling? Have you been running the heat a lot more than usual?

Depends on the amount of time for "usual" I put a space heater in the reptile room about 2 months ago. And he wasn't swelling. P.S my room stays about 75 or so.

Nothing to do with temperature, rather humidity. Has he shed (not counting this last time) since you first put the heater in? Running a heater significantly lowers to ambient humidity in the room. Also, how often do you change his drinking water?

No this was his first shed since the heater, and about every two days.

Okay, not bad. What substrate do you use? I'm assuming he didn't brumate this year?
