gravid female eastern aggression

Postby Richard.C » Fri Jan 03, 2014 5:20 pm

Whilst sitting and watching the young gravid blotchies for the first time ever i saw gravid female eastern aggression between the 2 suspect gravid females, bigger one latched onto smaller ones tail, dominant small male just watched on

Ive never seen females do that, these 2 have been very placid, normally just males asserting dominance around breeding time

I think we have broken heat records today, it's currently 44C here. The skinks are surely feeling it.

When those black saturday fires were going a few years back we got a couple of 45s followed by 49 when the fires started up,made the 38 degree days seem cool

Havnt noticed any more eastern antics, but been in shed watching a hosmer drop

Melbournes got long cold winters,a nice winter day is like 17 degrees still and sunny, but there few and far between, lol

Melb has zero consisntancy, winters cold, temps prbably between 12 and 15 during day on average, can be colder or slightly warmer though, summers can be hot,but generally a mix of hot and cold, with the odd heat wave, its hard to label melbs weather as it will probably do something different than the ordinary, lol

Apart from tassie, melbs in one of the consistantly cooler zones

I'm on tank water here, the sprinkler only gets used sparingly. Other members from this forum have lost skinks in the heat in the past up this way. I hope everyone gets through unscathed this time.

Multiple locations in south East Queensland have sweltered through their hottest day in recorded history today.

I have one big mutha fan and I kept the shed closed up. No lights or heat on today, it's also insulated so I attempted to keep the temps down. Still warm inside though. Most skinks are in or near their water bowls.

Uninsulated tin shed for me so 3 or 4 fans to try and cool them down and yep lights out,in that heat wave i had to move stuff to ground level as even with fans it was toasty,to make it more fun 2 king skinks got out and i had the pleasure of trying to catch them in 49 degree heat, they were getting in and out of shed trying to avoid me,christ they were fast and when i did get a hold of one it bit me and croc rolled and got away again,in the end i had to man up and cop there bites

And i still love king skinks even after that, lol

Hope temps get back to normal for you asap, been a very odd year so far

7 degrees f. here this morning. Needless to say can't keep any lizards outdoors. That sure would be nice though.

It's -24*C (-34*C w/ windchill) here today. Nice and warm for now :) Apparently we have an extreme windchill warning out though, so I think it's about to drop again :( We've been stupidly cold this winter:

Somehow though, there are reptiles that survive the winters here, including a species of skink. My guys however spend the winter safe and snug indoors. One day I'd like to live somewhere where heat waves are a problem.
