Introduction and some questions!

Postby xxkincadesvanityxx » Wed Nov 06, 2013 10:35 am

Hello there! :D

I'm from Kentucky in the U.S.
I finally got my first blue tongue skink saturday Nov 2nd! He's estimated to be 4 years old, which for some reason, I'm doubting just because of how small he is.

However before even thinking about purchasing, I came on here, read through 74 pages on this forum! Yes, I read a bunch of topics that you guys posted just to get the idea of what I was getting into, I also read the amazing care sheet too!
I own a Leopard Gecko named Mordy and I DID own a silkback bearded dragon. However I had to rehome him, boyfriend didn't like how much work was involved with a silkie. I liked him alot, but he was waaay too much work. But he has found a nice home with a great family.
So since I was missing a day buddy, I found out about blue tongue skinks! Like I said earlier, after a long time of researching. I finally felt ready to get one! However I wanted an adult, an already hand tame adult. Which I got pretty lucky with this one!

When I went to get him. (He was a craigslist find) He was in a box with a blanket on top of him. I moved his blanket and heard that first ever huff. It was cute lol! I picked him up and held him close, WOW they feel so different! Really an amazing animal!
Anyways, I took him home along with his original home as well!
As we were taking the 2 hour drive back home, he acted like he wanted to climb up the box, so I took his two little front feet and placed them up on the box! As you can see with the pics below, he enjoyed the car ride quite well! He liked watching the cars go by haha!

Instead of :blah: on about him. I'll go ahead and get to the question part!

When I got him, it was below 55F degrees. From what I read, about this time Northerns go into brumation. Which I didn't want him to, but I believe him being exposed to the cold like this, made him go into brumation. I did bring a heat pack btw! The owner had nothing in the box but a blanket, but when I was with him I put the head pack on one side of the box under a towel, so he warmed up a little.
Okay so when I brought him home, I understood that he would hide for a while, just because it's a new home and such, but does that saying go when he is actually put back into the same tank that he's been living in? She sold me his tank and all. In which I'm treating him as if he was placed in a new tank. So basically trying to leave him alone.

I'm wondering if he's actually hiding, or brumating. Because one day I checked on him, I have the box cut up into a hide. I saw his little head and he was asleep at 4pm. So does this mean he's brumating? Or just taking a nap? Since adults eat once or twice a week, I put food in his tank on monday for 24 hours, he's not touching the food nor water. Which makes me believe he's actually brumating. opinions on this?

And here's the last question, I promise!
When I went to pick him up, the owner said that they just switched to aspen, they originally used cocoa fiber. They did say that he seemed to like it cause he can burrow in it now. However I noticed that his right eyelid was slightly swollen Sunday. Since I'm a little concerned about it, I pulled him out Monday to check, I only had him out for 1 minute just to check on him. His eye looks like it's getting better, I'm thinking since he's not used to aspen, he just irritated his eye. However I have called a few vets within an hour radius of me, to make sure they have dealt with blue tongues and just in case I had to bring him in.
Even though I believe he's brumating, is it okay for me to check on him like this? I know that you're supposed to NOT handle them at all during brumation, but I would be worried that if it's something else, he would get worse rapidly if I didn't check on him.

Okay there's just one more thing I HAVE to add!
Ever since I had him all setup in his new home, he hasn't huffed at me once! The previous owner said that he would do it occasionally, but so far he seems to be a super tame, lazy lizard. Even when I told my boyfriend to leave him alone (sunday) He took him out anyways and put him on the floor. It was amusing to watch him walk around lol! However he went under one of my shelves.. Woops.. well it all ended great! Ryan (bf) and I were debating on trying to move the shelf so we can get him, I pat the ground gently and was making high pitch baby talk. He actually stuck his head out and walked right out! Oh this is so awesome! :D

Okay okay, that's it I promise!

**BTW in the picture of someone holding him, that is my friend, not really experienced with reptiles, but I was watching just to make sure he wasn't going to slide off and fall.

Hi! Welcome to the forum! You have a gorgeous Northern. I can't say for sure but based on your pictures, he does look around full grown so 4 years old may not be that unrealistic. He also looks really healthy for a CL reptile. It is hard to say if he is burmating or not. I don't think transporting him to your house in cold weather is enough to send him into burmation, however, my Northern (usually) burmates every year without prompting. I've never lowered his temps or adjusted his light cycle. He just does it. I check on him once a week to make sure he is ok. In a few weeks, if he is still hiding most of the time and not eating, he is probably burmating and it is best to leave him alone for the winter. If he is out basking (I can't remember the exact place but it was once discussed and most people observed their Northerns to be early risers) then offer food and feel free to handle him. My Northern is up before his basking light turns on and without external stimulation (ie me with food), he is hiding/sleeping for the night by 4 PM. Lazy lizard is lazy.

I would watch the swollen eye for a day or two. If it goes away on it's own, no worries. If it gets worse or doesn't get any better, I would take him to a vet. I once transported a leopard gecko that bounced her head off the box and her eye swelled up for a day or two. It could be from transport or the substrate. You can also try gently wiping his eye lids with a damp paper towel or wash cloth to remove any dust/debris from near his eye. He should naturally close his eye when you wipe it.

Hope that helps and feel free to post (lots) more pictures!

Hey, my brother lives in Kentucky! What part are you from? He lives in Burkesville.. close to the Tennessee border.

Congratulations on the new Northern, by the way!

Have u measured your cage temps,if in a cool climate zone background temp is important to,as northerns being tropical can brumate even with hot basking spots if cool end stays cool

Check your basking spot temps and cool end temps, that will help to see if its trying to brumate or not,as it could just be settling in to new surrounds to

Looks like a good sized northern, could very well be 4 years old to

@Dakota I live in Meade County, on the border of Indiana. :)

I have measured his temps, basking spot is between 95-100.5, Cool end is between 76-78. I use a temp gun to track temperature.

Well it looks like we may do a vet visit, I know his eye looked rough Sunday evening. Checked him today and it's better, but I don't feel like it's better enough so to say.

I think he's around 18inches long, I didn't really check yet, just because I only handle him for very little time. But next time I check on him I'll get an exact measurement!
I have seen him bask once sunday evening, (photoperiod is 10am to 10pm) That's when I saw his eye and thought a vet trip was needed. But I did wait to see if it improved, which it did. slightly.

Which today! He was out and about, I think I interrupted him drinking water lol! I saw him by the water bowl and he was staring at me when I walked in the doorway to check on him. lol

But I got some more photos! You can see how his right eye is irritated. Also when I started taking photos, he decided he wanted to show off a bit. :P

That eye does look like it's bugging out a bit, more like there's pressure behind it rather than irritation. Vet visit might be a good idea.

He is a cutie for sure!

Ooohh, I really hope that I caught it early enough so it wont be so bad. :(
Sounds like she got better and found a new home!

Btw he had his first meal with me earlier. It was some pedigree mixed with turnip greens and powdered calcium+D3. :)

Not saying it is that, just something to look into. :) If it is anything serious, I hope you caught it in time, as well. :)

I already scheduled an appointment! Tuesday at 2:30.
So far the eye hasn't gotten any worse, but not really much better. But the vet tech said that if I ever needed to go in earlier, if he got dramatically worse before tuesday, she gave me the address and phone number of a 24 hour emergency clinic.
If you guys want, I can keep an update on how he's doing. :)

Also to keep this thread going since tuesday feels like it's so far away, how far do you guys travel to see your vet?
The vet I'm going to will be almost an hour drive, about 50 miles there and back.

I'm lucky that my vet is only about 15 mins away but I wouldn't bat an eye to drive over an hour for a vet.

So not fair how close you guys are to your vets!

Well he's eating like a little piggy! Been keeping a close watch on his eye, it hasn't gotten worse. Which is good! Snapped a few pics of him eating. :)

I drive 30-45 minutes to get to my vet, and another 30-45 to get back. I don't consider it to be that far away. Yanks are just spoiled with your fancy roads - everything has to be within a 10 minute drive or you act like it's across the planet
