2013/2014 breeding season first litter...Easterns

Postby RoryBreaker » Sat Nov 02, 2013 9:50 pm

This first time mother got in first today, she gave birth before the Northerns( not what I expected).

I'll let the pictures tell the story.

An interesting pattern on this one.

Three males had one shot each with her on the 25th of July,

26th of July,

and the 28th of July.
[I had another picture embedded here, but removed it as it was a different female in the picture]

If my maths is correct, that's 108 days from the last mating until giving birth ( because its the 3rd of November here). There was seven in the litter, only six are healthy.

Cheers

He definitely looks like he has the number 88 football shirt on, very unique.

Lovely babies. It's a shame about the funky little one, but she still gave you a good healthy brood.

It’s great to here the locale information. I have heard from a couple sources in the past that the eye bands on easterns generally seem to disappear somewhere just north of the NSW/QLD border. Does that sound reasonable to you in your experience? Of course I realize there isn’t a “line” or anything where they stop, but it would be nice to be able to know that my eye banded easterns are at least likely to be from the southern part of the T.s.scincoides range. Mine look a lot like these, just darker overall.

The problem I have found Jeff is that because Eastern Blue tongues are considered a basic entry level pet reptile, not a great deal of keepers here in Aus bother too much with locale specific animals, an eastern is an eastern in most peoples eyes.

Your eye band assumption does hold true generally, but from animals that I have seen in collections and in the wild, somewhere in Victoria the easterns start to get that greenish base colour and the eye bands just aren't as prominent as the Sydney forms. Went searching through my uploaded pics on the bucket but seems I haven't got any pics of Sydneys to show what I mean. Good excuse to put these pics up anyway.

The skink in the top 2 pictures Lea could easily pass as a Queenslander. Its good to see its just not my South Oz Easterns with faded eye bands.
