Sexing question

Postby TJreptiles » Sun Oct 27, 2013 9:39 pm

How old do northerns have to be before they start dropping sperm plugs? I was just wondering because that's one of the only sure fire way to tell the sex right?

Hemipene eversion is another surefire way to tell. I haven't seen my 3 month old northern evert yet, but he's pretty young and I don't even know if he is a male or not. The first time I saw my indo evert his hemipenes was at around 4-5 months. I'm fairly sure that sperm plugs followed soon after.
Edit: From looking through my older posts, the first plugs I saw were at around 6 months of age.

It is when the male reproductive organs which are usually stored inside the bodies of reptiles cone out. They do this when dropping plugs. This can happen when they poop, and you will know for sure when you see it happen (it's pretty noticeable as they stick out quite far).

Cool! You should post pics of your other reptiles in the off topic section, it sounds like you have some nice stuff.

Its more size related when they start everting, northerns are usually easily sexed once they have grown abit, especiallu if u have a few to compare witmales heads start ballooning quite early if grown fast anyways

5 or 6 months is often quoted for when to expect to see hemipenes, but can be earlier or often later depending on growth

Who says size doesn't matter?

Anyway I've had blotchies do it from about 7 inches in length.

He's about 5 or so months old. And around 12 in in length.

I think I got my first sperm plug at around 8-9 months old, and they came one after another!
