no experience with brumation myself so can't help you with personal experience.

Keep in mind that while your skink may brumate even if you do not change temperatures, it is not necessary for skinks that will not be bred in the upcoming season. While brumating happens in nature, it can actually be safer in captivity to not brumate.

Skinks that brumate when u dont change temps are picking up outside cues,whilst it may seem temps are at there usual,tropical reptiles can respond to lowering ambient temps,so whildt basking area is still hot,cool end temps can drop dramaticlly syncing lizards to think its brumation time

Even temperate forms can sense it and go to cool end to shut down

Temperate forms usually shut right down,tropical ones can stay active at times and even eat,they still have hot enough basking sites to digest if need be,but usually they dont eat a great deal and slow right down

They go where they feel comfy if they have the option,you have to remember tropical ones have access to day heat year round,usually 30 plus degrees celcius on a year round basis in the wild,though winter nights are alot cooler and theres wet/dry seasons

Most csptives are kept in areas that are alot cooler,so it foesnt take alot of outside influence to tell them to slow down
