US wild caught northerns??

Kidding, kinda.

I had to live with my parents for a couple months this summer while looking for a new place closer to work. While living there, a couple of my northerns gave birth - my older female had a nice clutch of 13 babies.

And that night she managed to open her cage door and let them all out.

My folks and I found 11 of the babies, but since it was summer we had all the doors open to cool down the house...we figured the last two must have gone out the nearby front door and were probably lost for good. That was mid June, and we haven't seen or found anything about them in all that time, and again, figured they were eaten or otherwise met their demise in the great outdoors. My folks have 10 acres in a very rural area of San Diego County, and the area is full of oak trees and arid scrubby type habitat. It's a nice area, and we're overrun with fence lizards, and regularly find horny toads, rosy boas, and plenty of kingsnakes and rattlesnakes. Great place for a herper to grow up in :)

So Friday, I get a text from my dad. "Found one of your skinks." SERIOUSLY?? Yup. Turns out at least one has survived in the yard all this time, with all its toes and a full tail. The only issue is an old scar on the face - otherwise, this baby is perfect. My folks found it on a patio under their lattice full of chardonnay grapes, eating some that had been knocked on the ground by birds.

It's a bit skinnier than I prefer, but surprisingly large and bigger than its captive raised siblings that my coworkers have. No idea what it's been eating this whole time, presumably stink bugs, snails, and clearly wine grapes.

I'll post pics tonight when I get back home, I picked it up yesterday and it chowed down on some fuzzies without hesitation.

Just had to share - I've never been so surprised in my life.

And for anyone wondering, all the skink cages now have locks on them, lol. Don't want to lose em again!

Just SD county :) I don't really like to give out where I or my folks live, sorry.

Top view - I looked it up and these babies were born mid June, so it's about 2.5 months old.

I'm not keeping it :) Since it's healthy and eating and pooping and fine, I brought it in to work. If my coworker doesn't take it home, it'll be available on the website (LLLReptile.com) in the next week or two.

Does the skink seem less wild than most wild imports because it was captive breed?

Wow! What a resilient and lucky little guy! Especially lucky he lives somewhere so warm, and not somewhere like the great white north, Canada, lol

I'm also curious about the temperament. Does he behave more like an Indo import or a CBB? I would imagine that he is not very tame, as he only spent the first day of his life in captivity.

Actually, it's the tamest baby I've had yet. Eats out of anyone's hand, doesn't care where it is and eats anyway, hung out on my shoulders all morning. Little bit of huffing and puffing when it's in a strange place, but that's it. I suspect it's been watching my parents hang out on the patio it was caught on for weeks, as there are lots of hiding places there.

You should name him Scarface.

Tony Montana: Okay, here's the story. I come from the gutter. I know that. I got no education... but that's okay. I know the street, and I'm making all the right connections. With the right woman, there's no stopping me. I could go right to the top.
–Tony Montana: Say 'hello' to my little friend!

u cant compare an escaped pet to a wildcaight imported indo,as the imported ones go through so much stress before getting to the states

in australia some forms are collected from the wild for the pet trade but because its small amounts with out the long delayed stresses of over crowding and poxy holding conditions the health issues are no where near as bad

i just recaptured a cunninghams skink that had been loose in backyard for around 2 years, there quite timid even as longterm captives, suprisingly it was well behaved when i handled it,it was probably used to me from trying to recapture it for so long, somehow it keeps getting out of outdoor cage,so its indoors now till i make a new cage for them, the other 5 are well behaved and stay in outside cage but this ones obviously sussed out a method of escape
