A Group of Skinks?

Postby Jawsh » Fri Jun 28, 2013 4:53 pm

I was just wondering what a group of skinks is called. Like a flock of birds or a herd of cattle. The most appropriate term I could come up with was a lounge, but that sounds better for lizards in general. Could anyone enlighten me?

About 6-7 years ago, it was decided that a group of 3 or more blueys should be refered to as a "tangle" on this forum.

I don't understand why Tiliqua would be any different than any other lizard? :|

From what I read, Lounge is pertaining to all lizards of any species of the same genus, am I right?

That's true. Lounge refers to all lizards in general, but I wanted to know more specifically. It's like how a group of birds is called a flock, but a group of crows is called a murder.

True, but the birds get their names from gatherings in the wild.. which I only know of shingles that actual coming together for a decent amount of time.

If it was me, I would either call it "collection" or "lounge", but that's just my opinion.

Wow. It generally takes a LOT to get a post out of Ray. Who would have thought dredging up memories of his old friend would have elicited a response. :hehe:

I actually think the official verbage is "a LOUNGE of lizards". I can't imagine a more stupid name for it, but that is what the official scientific people call it. I think the fact that "lounge" is so stupid is why some people here tried to come up with something better. It was moreless a joke last time it came up though, so Ray is right. It was just a bunch of us unqualified morons pretending like we had the authority to make such decisions. Tangle is no worse than lounge though, in my opinion.

As most BTS don't naturally live in groups a collective noun isn't really necessary. Other skinks that do practice living in groups generally do so in a specific area such as a rocky outcrop so they effectively colonise the area. Accordingly, they are usually referred to as a colony.

A lounge of lizards is just as weird as a murder of crows or a parliament of owls. One that does ring a little truer is a pandemonium of parrots.
