Great looking babies, congratulations! Is five a typical litter size for you? I'm only asking because I seem to have a few smaller litters like that every year, but it seems to be different females each year.

Thanks Jeff! No these are not typical litter sizes - Annie has had as many as 10; another female last yr. 17; one female under the same condtions every yr had litters of 2,1,7,8,14.12 consecutive yrs. With your smaller litters are there unfert. ova aswell?

I have had various numbers of unfertilzed ova from litter to litter, but never what I felt was an excessive number. Your inconsistent litter sizes sound just like what I have experienced over the years. It swings wildly for each female from year to year.

This year has been the strangest ever for me though. I have had more still born babies than ever before, as well as more deaths in the first 48 hours after birth than ever before. All the babies that are left are doing great, and are perfect in every way. I have just never had so many NOT thrive before. The number of unfertilized ova is actually down this year. I have had very few of them.

Last yr. I had a litter of 17 with 12 stillborn - I"ve only had one still born previous yrs. I've actually never had a baby die after it's been born, I must be lucky as this seems to be reported quite often. I've had alot of unfert. ova, infact in a number of litters that's all I had! Your low # of unfert. ova - I think you might have a better handle on post brumation temps / timing etc. than I ( something I may need to tweek abit :-) Strange your still births and infant deaths - must be very upsetting and hopefully you can figure out what's causing it.

with the tail nipped one , ive had the odd one of those , only in northerns and new borns

I have a feeling its got to do with litter mates stealing there yolk sacks,which are often over tail when born

Do you put food in with Mom and babies after she starts delivering? I always put wet dog food with a little water in a plastic lid and drop it down in the tank. Mine always appreciated a bite to eat around that time. I even have video of her eating from one end and pushing out a baby at the other end.
