Nice to meet you all!! [imgs]

Postby Reeses » Mon Apr 22, 2013 7:23 pm

Hey everyone! It's really great to find a place like this, especially having come with so many questions I had answered just by reading through all the threads.
I just got my first BTS yesterday as a birthday gift after looking into getting one for years. He's a baby, I'm not sure exactly how old or even what species exactly, but I'm in love with him already! I grew up with Green Iguanas, so this is a pretty big difference, but I have at least a little bit of an idea as to what I'm doing lol.

Here's a look a little Irwin for you guys!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes!!

I actually have a question about the little guy already, lol. Today, his poop consisted of 3 completely undigested meal worms. Now, Irwin is a little piglet and since day one has been chowing down on anything I'm giving him. I've seen him at the meal worm bowl at least once a day, so I'm just assuming he ate too much? His stool yesterday was completely normal.

Undigested worms aren't unusual and not a huge concern. But meal worms (and beardie treats) aren't all that healthy, so I'd look at switching to something else. Have you had a look at the diet chart? If you want to feed feeders, dew worms, silk worms, horn worms or cockroaches are great choices. Meal worms and other less healthy stuff is fine in moderation but I wouldn't use those all the time. :)

If they eat lots of feeders that are mostly chitin with little meat they can pass undigested worm parts.

Katrina, I only give the Beardie treats as just that, only a piece or two when I have him out to get him used to handling (: As far as worms, I only got the meal worms since I had read that they sometimes didnt eat when they initially come home, plus the pet shop owner had told me they had trouble getting him eating at first, so I figured I would get a whole variety just to get a feel of his favorites. I had also gotten wax worms which he devoured, and I plan on trying out the others as well. The cockroaches they had were huuuuge so I wanted to wait on those until he got a little bigger. I was mostly planning on just giving him a variety of protein sources, I have canned monitor/tegu food, canned snails, and all sorts of live feeders to grab from te store (: .

Dakota and Bluish, thank you!!!

I feel really lucky that my first guy is so beautiful :D!!

No worries - I was just checking, lots of new owners don't really know what to feed and pet stores will sometimes say that meal worms and crickets are great staples. Glad you have lots of variety planned, a couple undigested worms are nothing to worry about. :D

That is a lovely merauke! If you havent already, you should check out the food charts. I printed it off and still refer back to it :) (I also may have a version on my fridge...)
