BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

Well it has been a while since I posted anything about my two guys so here we go

Bruce the Merauke is likely somewhere around 18 months old, is about 21" long and weighs 821g... life has maybe been a bit too good.
Ever since he has been moved to his new enclosure about 5 months ago he has got back to being skittish and doesn't ask to come out anymore, but he is getting better with lots of regular hand fed treats. (Thus his weight is explained ) I actually am not sure on his gender, he hasn't dropped in plugs in the 9 months I have had him.

Hobbes the Northern (From Fatal_S) is now 10 months old, about 15" long (A complete guesstimate) and weighs a whopping 509g... I weighed her twice. Definitely time for a diet.
But she has turned into a sweet girl(?), she never huffs at me anymore and stopped threatening to snap at me whenever I pick her up. She occasionally asks to come out, but changes her mind whenever I open the door (She may have learned something from the cats).

Last night I whipped up a real lame skink pen, definitely not escape proof but just something to let them loose in while I watch. Their different reactions to being outside were interesting. Hobbes would stomp around and flatten everything like a T-Rex, she was very "up" and would try climbing out. Bruce on the other hand tried his best to get as close to the dirt under the grass as possible and would press his nose under the boards and try to wiggle out. Overall I would say Hobbes enjoyed it more.

I find that 18 inches high is enough to stop 2ft long blueys getting out. Generally the bigger the more clumsy anyway. Going under is a different matter, a small trench lined with gravel tends to slow them down a lot. Even a little bit of time outdoors seems to invigorate them to some degree. Good work.

Thanks! It is funny that you mentioned that, that is what I noticed! Bruce is definitely bigger, but he wasn't able to climb as high as Hobbes.
I would actually really like to sink the wall into the ground an inch because the ground is uneven and there is gaps that Bruce is wonderful at exploiting. But a gravel trench is actually a really good idea! If I can actually make this pen semi-permanent and escape proof I would like to give that a try. A lid might be a good idea as well.

So jealous! I love that Merauke! Nothern has some cool coloring on it, also.. definitely love your collection.
