BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

Well they're still housed together so I'm wondering if this might be from a scratch? It's only one eye and I'm assuming she could have been scratched from the other blue tongue since they share a hide. I will have my other cage completed tomorrow so they will be separated by the end of the week.

Does anyone know what this could be, what's recommended to do and is a vet check up necessary?
This was just after waking her up if that has anything to do with it..

I'm also thinking she's gravid, pretty certain she wasn't this big before.

If you clean it.. does it come back?

Does she moves with her front legg towards her eye?

I have yet to try to clean it as I don't know what it is, and she wasn't trying to scratch it or anything.

Isn't bubbly eyes/nose a sign of a respiratory infection?

I thought this was helpful: "Unless the eye itself has been injured it is most likely an infection to the soft tissue in the mouth which has become infected. The infection cause swelling inside the skull which puts pressure on the eye. The eye will probably recede into the socket. It will probably need antibiotics. While a respiritory infection isnt out of the question the eyes, ears and the lungs are not connected like mammals so excess fluid would manifest in the mouth first.
This is only one possibillity of course.
Check the ears as well. An infection in the ear can effect the eye. Another common factor in eye problems are crush injuries. The swelling in the skull again."

early stages of a respitory infection can be watery bubbly eyes,before u notice anything else

not saying its that though,is it just the one eye?

hows its behaviour otherwise?

what are your enclosure temps?

keep a close eye on it and perhaps up temps if they are a smidgen low,especially background temp,we can only speculate on here,sometimes a vet visit is highly reccomended,especially if its the early signs of something or possable early signs

Often the sign of a respiratory infection. This is quite a bubbling, so I would go to your vet ASAP. Over inflating the lungs is common with chest infection, due to the lack of diaphragm. This could explain why she looks more puffed out and why you suspect her to be gravid.

Once infection sets in, it can quickly overcome your skink, so rather than wait for an analysis, I'd see your vet. If it turns out to be just a scratch, but if not, you'll have got on top of an infection more quickly.

I made an appointment for tomorrow but the bubbling of the eye was completely gone when I got home, there's no mucus in the ears, nose or eyes so should I still be worried?

Still go, it'll be worth the check up anyway. It might need eye drops anyway, so it will be best to play safe. You can always cancel tomorrow if things have really improved, but I'd encourage you to still go.

For my local place it's extremely pricey compared to the rest of them but they all are around one hour away compared to 15 minutes but I'm going to take her in anyways. Her eye doesn't look completely normal now so I'm hoping everything is fine. The reason I thought she is gravid is because of the weight gain and the previous owner saw them lock up.

I do think I'm going to switch from jungle mix to eco earth because the jungle mix has too many little pieces of bark that even poke into my finger while moving substrate around.

My male is shedding well right now though so I'm happy about that.

I'm glad you are still taking her, since bubbling like that is never normal. Just because a symptom subsides doesnt mean there is not an underlying issue. Please let us know how she is doing when you get back! Also, if it is a respiratory infection, they are very contagious, so keep a close eye on the male as well.

I'm going to take her in to a local reptile shop today with an owner that has veterinary experience to take a look as well with a vet appointment tomorrow. Hoping she's fine and it was just irritated from substrate.

And you were right, absolutely no signs of RI and her eye is 100% normal now. The person I spoke to does have veterinary experience and couldn't hear anything wrong, the stomach didn't have any pressure build up, the ears eyes and nose were all fine. I cancelled the vet but I will be watching her for the next week and switching to eco earth.

I also bought 10 roaches as a treat, the male is smashing on one right now

Not that it's at all the same thing, but one of my skinks had an eye issue that showed up suddenly, then disappeared, only to re-appear later as part of a massive infection. Keep an eye on it. My guy very nearly died, and he's still physically damaged from it.

In my opinion they just have experience with reptiles, but NOT the medical facts and knowhow!

Hopefully they were right...
