Allergies?

Postby Belephant » Mon Feb 11, 2013 5:48 pm

Hey everyone I have a two year old skink named Cyrus. I bought him a year ago and noticed he seemed to have an uper respiratory infection so I took him to the vet. After several ineffective antibiotics the vet took samples and cultured them. He discovered that Cyrus had no harmful bacteria or any infection of any kind in him and told me he had no idea what to do. Cyrus sneezes and has a mucus build up on his lips. His eyes also get glued shut when he sleeps. Does anyone else have any idea what I can do for Cyrus?

What species is Cyrus? This is an important question, as this can happen to gigas. More info about him would be helpful.

He had lost the tips to most of his toes when I bought him i just assumed his previous owner was not very good but it could be part of this. His substrate is astro turf and his cage temp is around 90

That is definitely at least part Northern, and it doesn't look like there is any gigas in him. A bird's eye view of the whole body would be more helpful. There is a topic in the advanced discussion forum that discusses the disease in gigas species. Are the symptoms similar?

thank you so much! hopefully this picture is better. And yes those symptoms sound very similar. The only difference is that he has never gotten worse and he still eats and moves around quiet a lot. He also sneezes quiet frequently i don't know if thats of any importance but may be worth mentioning.

I don't know if it is an illusion but he seems to have a mark on his lip which could indicate an infection. Bacteria can reside in mucosa, particularly in the skull, jaws etc can be a complex bacterial soup. The scarring around the front of the mouth indicates that he probably has had an serious mouth infection at some stage. My bet is that he has a resident infection. Nasty things like Staph aureas can reside in tissues such as bone (osteomyelitis) and come and go and produce the symptoms you describe. Not saying that this is the problem but something to ask your vet about.
