Basking
Well, Smudge has not basked since I have had him and the pet shop did not have a basking they had a warm and cool hide. Should I get a warm and cool hide or just the baking rock if I put him on the basking rock, he basks but otherwise he just wonders around it not know what to do, it's not high up or anything.

Re: Basking
Is it a hot rock or do u have a basking lamp shining onto a rock to make a hot spot?
What temp is the hot spot
Blueys have a preffered body temp they like to sit at,but need hot and cool areas to control it,choices, bsking spot temp needs to be above preffered body temp otherwise they wont be able to raise there body temps to a level they desire, which can vary, hence offering more heat than needed and areas to cool right off,so they can move to areas to do what they like body temp wise
Maybe a pic of enclosure or description of how its heated, its size and temps at warm end and cool end ect will help to answer your questions,im not sure how u have set it up,it could very well be set up spot on,but some more info will help there,if its hot there now like in melb he wont be interested in basking, which could explain things to,but yeah, more info helps with getting a more accurate answer, otherwise we are just guessing

Re: Basking
what is a warm and cool hide?
if you have an electrical heat rock throw it out. no need to think twice about it xD they malfunction too often, and the effects from their malfunctionign is not pretty.
he definitely needs a basking spot.
if he didnt have one in the pet store that counts as severe mistreatment of the animal. reptiles need to attain their preferred body temps to break down food, grow and fight disease. its the main key for their survival, and part of their natural behaviour. blueys can spend a week not really basking, and then spend months where they never miss it. its entirely up to them and what they want
as long as the temps are correct.
have you checked the temperatures on the surface of the basking spot? make sure its proper and not too warm or cold.
we need photos for detailed help. tank setup can be tricky at times.
otherwise, dont be too worried. they know how to do

Re: Basking
You're worrying too much. Like most new owners.
Double check temps and husbandry and if everything is fine then just leave him be. He'll bask if he needs to. Don't put him there - he knows if he needs to warm up or drink or whatever. Just let him settle in and do his thing, he definitely doesn't need you thermoregulating for him!

Re: Basking
No heat rock and a cool hide is a hide on the cool end and a hot hide is a hide underneath the heat lamp.
