Another Skink Refusing Food-

Postby Kbell31 » Sat Jan 26, 2013 7:43 pm

Indah has not eaten for roughly 2 months. I am going by the forum and from what I can tell as long as she isnt dropping weight and everything else is normal this is not a cause for concern. I dont understand however how she can remain so active although she isnt eating.
I did a full tank cleaning today and in lieu of the normal aspen bedding I use I did mix in some cocoa fibre to increase the humidity a bit. Her scales were getting rough on her belly. The furnace has been kicking on often with this cold spell we are having and I know the humidity is low in the house due to it.

Anyways here are some pics I took tonight of her- Any concerns with her weight? Im thinking not.... :D

Looks like she could use a few more months of not eating  That is not a skinny skink in any way. She is however absolutely gorgeous. What a looker <3

 no, I wouldn't worry about the drastic dieting! She's probably doing her own "brumation", but since it's still light and warm in there, she's remained active, too. She looks healthy, nice and plump and her eyes ere bright, her whole pose suggests she's alert, with no signs of lethargy, so I wouldn't be concerned.

Being so active, she'll probably burn off a few grams. You might want to decrease your light/heat on period, so she can think about having a proper sleep for a few weeks. Just keep the water fresh. She will do what she decides though and could insist on staying awake anyway, that does happen on occasion.

Definatly fine weight wise,id say shes picked up outside conditions and is actually fasting, remember these guys are quite tropical, even if basking temps are still warm, cooler back grounds is often enough for them to esteviate, rest out the dry season, waiting for the wet and more consistant heat and humidity, because thats also when food is more abundant

As soon as it starts to warm up outside i reckon you will see her appetite return, tropical animals can be quite active in there rest period, alot even mate smack bang in the middke of it,so babies are born earlier in the wet season giving them a chance to feed up before the dry kicks in again

So interesting how outside variations are picked up upon even while remaining in a constant environment inside. Instinctual forces are pretty strong I guess. It was in November of last year that I purchased her and she didnt do this- but I think a lot of that had to do with the fact of simply adjusting to the new surroundings. It also warmed up very early last spring- what a disaster that was for the apple orchards and other things- felt nice to be outside, but it just wasnt right.

Basking temps can still be similar, but if room temp and back ground temps cool off, thats enough to set them into brumation mode
