Whats the story behind your blueys name?

Postby Nae » Wed Jan 23, 2013 3:29 am

Courtesy of the naming thread by Reptile-Mad, I thought it would be fun to find out where everyones bluey names came from, since I know there are some fairly interesting ones out there~

Zeke is named after a robotic raptor dinosaur thing from a show I LOVED as a kid called Zoids  I do also occasionally call him Ezekiel~

Mazi's original names waaas...Mas? It stood for something that I dont recall.... Then because of my odd accent/way of speaking, I always pronounced it Maz anyway, and as such his name became Maz/ Mazi/ Mazmataz (A play on razmataz)

Haha that's great Richard...

Sylvia came to me with her name and it seemed to fit, so Sylvia she remained.

Tiberi came from my mother wanting to name her James Tiberius Kirk when I first got her, but since she's looking so girly, I usually shorten it to Tiberi.

Mine as talked about before, are all named after zerg units from Star Craft. The BF INSISTED. X_X Other critters in my house however are arbitrarily named by me, so there are some weird names floating around :D

Indah is the name of my Merauke. From what I understand it means "beautiful" in Indonesian so I thought it was fitting.

I was going to name my northern Theodore Archibald (my housemate begged for Archibald to be its middle name), because I saw BTS as such a sweet-natured species. But when I finally got him, he was (and is) such a little rascal I couldn't possibly go with such a sweet name like Theo... instead I named him Ajax. For some reason I felt the way it sounded hinted at his feisty personality!

We love Greek/Roman Mythology so many of our pets are named after Greek/Roman Gods. We have skinks- Thor, Calypso, and Ember (Thor & Ember are from Norse Mythology) 2 cats Zeus & Athena.

Hmmm... Trying to remember.

Kira was the only name the ex and I could agree on. Kira turned out to be a boy.
Jaxi was Jaxon... seemed like a manly lizard. Again, wrong (the seller 'sexed' them for me... haha).
Nemo - he was super sick when we got him and I gave him a bath to get stuck shed off and he wriggled around like a fish. It was a quick decision because I thought he might die right away and I didn't want him to die without a name.
Stewy - came named, was only supposed to keep him for a couple months while his previous owner moved. That was 3 or 4 years ago!
Riff-Raff - came named as well, again - owner was supposed to take him back eventually (that was a couple years ago as well).
Callie - was originally Mau but that didn't seem feminine enough. She's a pretty girl, Callie fit well.
Simon - was originally something weird like Lester. It didn't seem to fit, after a while I decided Simon was a good fit.
Sami - I learned from Jaxi and Kira not to give gender specific names to babies!!
Rollie - it just suited him, I knew a very funny guy who was Rollie and somehow it fit really well.
Phoenix, Roswell, Nevada, Bermuda - realized that I had too many BTS so started naming them after places. I finally figured out a theme.

Stinky was named Roger by the previous owners. But they nicknmaed him stinky because he would often pee on them (they had 3 large barky dogs, which was why they were getting rid of him). While Stinky hasnt peed on us! We just thought Stinky the skinky was cute to say. Now, I tend to think of his name as referring to the fact thqt he's so stinking cute!

My BF and I are big into anything with wheels. I drive a Dodge, and thought the name Hemi would be cute. I also liked the name Spur, it's Western sounding and I'm big on that too. The BF didn't like the name Spur so we settled on Hemi. The BF has named the hopefully soon to be new BTS addition....its name, MOPAR. Though, we're not sure what sex it is. :?

This might take some time, trying to recall all the names of my skinks, both living and dead...
Pryce: I met him in a pet store with a friend and randomly named him Vincent Price after the actor. I then changed it a bit to match the other skinks better.
Wocket: I saw a Dr. Seuss story called "Wocket in my pocket". I thought it would be cute to have a skink in my pocket. So I decided to call one of my soon-to-arrive skinks Wocket.
Trikks: As long as I have a Wocket in my pocket, I figured I should also have Trikks up my sleeve. Both new skinks were named before arriving, while I was reading Dr. Seuss in the bathroom
Skids: His full name is Skidamarink. As in the song "Skidamarink a-dink a-dink, Skidamarink a-doo, I love you."
Jenga: He bites, so you need to be careful with your fingers. Jenga is a game that requires about the same level of care and concentration.
Trouble & Clue(RIP): I already had Jenga, so I decided to follow the theme and name all my Caramel Northerns after games I like to play.
Fluke: I bought 2 skinks - one for me, one for a friend. She picked hers. So I got this one by chance, and there's a chance she carries a blue-eye gene. Thus, she's a Fluke.
Evita: This is the 2nd of the above ^. After a year, my friend couldn't handle her, and gave her back. I honestly can't remember if I randomly picked Evita, or she was already named.
Bomber: My mom fell in love with this oddball runt, and she loves our local football team the Blue Bombers. He's already got blue, so I called him Bomber for her.
Harris & Alrick: Following along with Vincent Pryce, my first BTS, I decided to name these two after actors I like: Alan Rickman and Neil Patrick Harris.
Eco: She bit my friend, so I let my friend name her. My friend actually said Ego (apparently the skink had one), but to match my other random named I modified it to Eco.
Cloud(RIP): Very pale with a silver lining - like clouds.
Cash: I was doing an import with another person (Serenity), and we picked out some skinks, including this tanimbar, #4. Ren said all she wanted from this shipment was $. I thought she wanted money, but she meant #4. So it's her skink, and it's real name is Toulouse/Touly, but since it's living with me I named him Cash.
Izuru, Mizu, Battosai(RIP): All owned by Serenity ^, and she picked out Japanese themed names for the IJs.
Hank & Cyrus(RIP): Owned by Stuart and here on breeding loan. Obviously he thought Hank was a boy...
Jack & Tequila (both RIP): Named after alcohol. This stunning pair of yellow indos died during shipping, so I never got to meet them, but I plan to carry on their tradition by using booze for indonesian skinks.
Mau, Poker, Whist (all RIP): I named Mau randomly when I got her, and after that I've used card-game names for all my meraukes.
Canasta: Despite my bad luck with meraukes, I decided to carry on tradition and name her after a card game. She's amazing and super healthy thankfully <3
Grumpy: He was named by his previous owner. He's pretty new, so I haven't decided on a good card-game name for him yet.
Babies: My first year I named the babies for the patterns on their back. The first litter got one letter, and the second litter had 2 letters. Bomber was special and got a real name. My second year I used the first letter of the mothers name (Fluke and Evita), and then picked all girl names (no reason). Only baby Elsa will be staying with me, and she'll keep her name (Els if it's a boy though?).

I know I'm missing some that passed years ago, but those are all the names I can recall right now. I love naming my animals, thought it can take me a long time to get the right name. I have a long list of names for future skinks, some random, some that follow themes :)
