please help- is my new girl cycling/brumating herself?

Postby Gesang » Wed Jan 09, 2013 2:19 pm

Main questions: Is my new female brumating herself? Should I leave her alone or intervene? I was told not to cycle her this year as it may kill her because she may be a recent import. The person who told us to NOT brumate her is Deer Fern Farms. He has good success with this species and is well regarded. We were planning to cycle her next year and try to have her breed after that.

Details about animal: Possible female. Age unknown. Measures 20.5" total and weighs 467 grams. Purchased 1 week ago from "Off the Ark". Appears to be in excellent condition. Ate and drank heartily upon arrival and active. Defecated/urinated once.

Background: We received her last Tuesday. She is in a 55 gal tank by herself. Her shavings are 5-6" deep and she has a 100Watt merc vapor bulb on the screen lid above her tile basking spot. She also has a large water "lagoon" and other decoration. She ate kale, apple, butterworms, a cricket, and 1 defrosted pinky mouse in the first 2 days she was here. She also bathed and drank off and on for several hours. Since then she has burrowed under her shavings and doesn't come out. I was told not to brumate her because she may be a fairly recent import and brumation might kill her. But she appears to be brumating herself, or is she just acclimating? One time when I lifted her out of her shavings she ate one tiny butterworm, nothing else, and burrowed down again. That was 4 days ago. Since then, when I check on her to see if she is OK she becomes active but is not interested in food or heat nor in staying above ground. She is so low in her shavings that her body feels very cold when I dig her out. I'm afraid to let her cool down because she doubtless still has food in her system.

Here are pics of our male last April when he was young. He now measures 632g and is about 22".

Just keep the temperatures in the enclosure normal. You can't stop some skinks from brumating no matter what you do, but as long as the temperatures are warm she will still digest the food she has eaten.

If she is a recent import, then she is probably not truly brumating, but possibly just confused by the new climate. Everything is likely different from where she came from even if you do your best to regulate the temperatures within the enclosure. Some BTS will seem to pick up on what is going on outside the enclosure too. If she stops eating though, I would wait 10-14 days, then lower the temperature. That way she will likely shut down. Otherwise, if you keep a skink warm for an extended period while it is not eating, it could start to lose condition.

I don't think you have anything to worry about at this point.

I would say she's just scared as heck and hiding out. Very normal for new skinks, and WC skinks can take several weeks to really settle in. She's also not a species that normally brumates, so I doubt that's what she's going for. Make sure your setup is perfect (~100*F hot spot, 85-95 on the warm side, 70s on the cool side) and give her some time.

Those shavings are also very deep. I tend to give my guys 2 inches at most. Just enough that they can get under and feel hidden, but I want it easy to find them.

Good luck with her, she's very pretty.

Thank you for the replies! I will lower the depth of the shavings, keep an eye on all temp levels and let her settle in. We got our boy last April but he was not an import so circumstances were different. The second set of pictures are of him.
