awww...its brumation time :(

Postby Spindown » Sat Dec 01, 2012 4:31 pm

I've been cycling the lights down for the last 2 months, in preparation for fall & winter. It is now Dec. 1st, and the lights have been turned off at last. I'm in the process of creating some custom hides, since my northern female liked a hide she had last winter SO MUCH that she wouldnt come out of brumation until I took it away!!! (silly goose :P)

I have filled their tanks with lots of aspen to burrow in, a change from the 1/2 & 1/2 newspaper & aspen setup I had going on before, and activity levels have definitely dropped. They all spend most of their time buried now, and were only coming out to bask in during the few hours of light they had left.

My herp room is kept at a pretty steady range of 76-78*F, and will continue to be maintained at that temperature all winter, as my Kenyan Sand Boas are also being cooled for the spring breeding season.

I'm going to be lonely. I'll only have 4 herps left awake and handleable...my special Suriname, my 2 young sand boas, and my axolotl. At least cats dont brumate :)

I'm learning about clicker training, and its cross-species possibilities, and I'm planning on spending my time off from work this winter training my axolotl and my cat.

I know exactly how you feel. I haven't seen Coomassie in over a month and Bandit (my PTS) only comes out once or twice a week. While most of my animals don't burmate per say, they do slow down even though our reptile/bedroom says around 75 and they all have supplemental heating. I'm part lonely and part jealous that they get to sleep ALL winter....

One of the fringe benefits of breeding blueys, is that when all of your breeders are asleep for the winter, you still have all the babies that you hold onto, awake.

All of my adults are locked away in dark caves now, but I still have 4 northerns, 2 blotchies, and 1 eastern that were all born this past season. I still get to hang out with them throughout the winter.

Yeh, it's nice that the tortoises stay up all year. The skinks will be cooled for 8-10 weeks depending on how busy I am when it's tiime to wake them up. It always seems like 8-10 months though. :|
