BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

I buy the wellness brand dog food. I can't find the small cans so I have to buy large ones. I feed every other day and one can has lots of food. I was thinking of freezing into the portions that I use for feeding. This way the food won't go bad. Any advice?

I make a mixture of veggies, dog food, a little bit of fruit and supplements into a paste using a blender, which I put in the freezer. Works well for me. If you devide it in the amounts you use to feed them it's just a matter of taking out a portion at a time.

I do the same as Neils, minus the fruit. I use a food processor. I have itty bitty tupperwares, so 2 meals fits in one tiny tupperware for the skinks. If I'm using a big can of dogfood, like Pedigree, It makes enough for 4 skinks for 5 weeks. Every 5th-6th week they get the fresh stuff before it get into the freezer. I also have learned that squash is super gross when thawed out, so they will be getting fresh squash with every meal now.

Do you have a baby or very young skink? I ask because adults dont really need to be fed every other day.

I have one skink that is exactly 4 months old.

I have a skink that is 3 months old, she eats every single day, has a very big appetite and quite active. I've only had the one baby, rest are all adults but i'd feed a skink under 12 months every day to every couple or few days. Im lucky enough to be able to buy the little dog food packs, but i sometimes by the big ones with mixed veggies and freeze portions. with a baby i freeze in portions sizes that will feed her for 3 days, then thaw the next lot. I prefer to feed fresh food, but she seems to enjoy the frozen just as much

I have way to many skinks,so im the oppasite,dont make cans big enough,lol

Rani-May you should try dealing with NZ laws...the only way we seem to get something is via smuggling...

Really? that bad? What kind of laws do you have there when it comes to reptiles?

I'm possibly exaggerating, but from what little I know we generally can't import anything, even if it's already here. We've got only Eastern BTS for general sale (there is a rumour that we have some shingle backs in a private collection somewhere), Beardies (both Coastal and Inland - is that right?) - we've got yellows and reds of these which mysteriously popped up after the ban on importing, and we've recently got Leopard Geckos - again, the hi yellow has mysteriously popped up.

Can't even have snakes in zoos.

BTS are not allowed in parts of Auckland due to their giving live birth and being possibly able to survive in the wild due to the temperature. The ones already up there are covered in a grandfather clause which is ok, but you aren't even allowed to advertise them for sale on TradeMe (like e-bay) if you are in Auckland.

We're very conscious of how it will affect our wildlife since we have all those flightless birds. I have no problem with wanting to save our native wildlife, but man I want a snake and miss my ferrets! Ferrets got banned as pets too, despite coming desexed from farms. The other weird thing about that is that we still have the farms and last I heard we ship our ferrets to Italy - NZ governments; not known for common sense and logic...

I personally freeze the dogfood, and then the veggies seperately. Then when I need it, I can de-frost the dog food, and choose the veggies I want to.

Yeah Tasmania can't import or export anything no matter what either. But we have snakes at zoos, thats just crazy lol. We only have blotchies, definitely nothing more than that with blue tongues, we have tasmanian mountain dragon and a few snakes. Ferrets were banned? That would've hard to give up if you already had them Thats rough

I've been meaning to do the same thing! I am going to freeze it in ice cube trays do that I have a good portion each time!
