My skink is an oddball (pics inside)

Postby Rhianimal » Thu Oct 04, 2012 12:43 pm

I have read a great deal about how BTS seem to be intelligent reptiles. Maybe mine is the exception. Pretty much every day he does things that seem senseless or overly difficult. He also has weird attachments.

Like the paper towel put down for a feeding. He seems to really like it.

He's already back to hanging out on it today.

Image

Sometimes he tries to act like Spider-Man. Not very graceful.

Image

Strangest of all, he seems smitten with his thermometer. He will seek it out and knock it over. Even if it's put really far out of his way, he will climb to it and knock it. Sometimes he bites it. You can see his fresh thermometer conquest (It's the silver and black thing under his head):

Image

I'm told he has repeatedly been napping with his head on the thermometer today. Yesterday he fell asleep with his head in his bowl of food, woke up a long while later, and munched a little more. Then he very intently watched things from inside a hide. :noknow:

He's pretty silly. I'm guessing the paper towel feels very soft and nice because he kept going for it all of last night.

I bet he is hanging out on the white paper towel because it reflects light. It must either make him feel warmer or cooler than the rest of his environment. I doubt it's a senseless behavior! Do you have a basking platform for him? He's really cute! Seem like quite the character! I never knew BTS could have personalities but my two are very different from one another! The thermometer thing is beyond me! lol! I wonder if he does it for entertainment or if it's reflective and he can see himself in it or if it reminds him of a food item...no idea! I'm sure he has his reasons, we may never know them though! Thanks for sharing your quirky friend!

He does have a basking platform, yes. He basks pretty often. The towel is at the foot of the basking rock. :)

Got home today from a few days away. He had made a gigantic dirt mound in a hide. Pretty silly animal.

Your skink is adorable. I know mine enjoys soft blankets/towels much more than his substrate lol. Once I put in a wash cloth and he kept curling up in it and laying on it, I also had a little blanket i put in there for him in the past he would crawl around inside and sleep in.

It's hard to get a picture most times because he loves investigating the camera.

Oh my. Last night Gucci Mane had me in tears.

Sometimes I offer him a bit of a treat between meals. Small bit of fruit, piece of vegetable, insect, whatever. Last night he seemed pretty lazy so I offered him a freeze-dried cricket. He has started to come out of his hiding area when the door on the cage slides open, and there he was immediately excited and ran for the treat.

He chomped the cricket and managed to knock its head off and into the substrate. As soon as he had swallowed he could smell there was more to eat, but he couldn’t see it. He started vigorously digging with his snout as he sniffed around, but he was not finding it. I picked it up and put it in plain sight on a rock, and he ran up past it and couldn’t find it.

This repeated a few times—showing him the cricket head, putting it down, his attempt to find it that resulted in it getting knocked away, and an empty mouth. When he couldn’t track it down he was smelling and looking around everywhere. He was getting extremely worked up. By try 4 of placing the piece he had drool bubbling along both sides of his mouth. It was so ridiculous and excessive that as he was scurrying around next to his house, he brushed his mouth on the wall of his house and managed to leave a trail of lizard drool all over it (it was stringy and got all over him as well).

Couldn’t keep myself from laughing at that point, which led to him running around, knocking over a water dish, and going back to try and find that one tiny piece of cricket… I haven’t found an animal that funny in a long time.

Oh, and he still loves his thermometer.

Gucci was doing a lot of sneaky ninja work this weekend. He manages to go from one end of his cage to the other without a sound (unless he knocks things over). He was very active! Discovered he loves cucumber.

he also postures like this sometimes:

Image

Not sure what that's about, but he does it fairly frequently. He has a really red throat!

Finally caught him yawning:

Well thanks!

Gucci has been very active lately. Yesterday he redecorated his entire cage. Seems to do that when he's hungry.
